well as I quote what the advisor at JCP told me..

I currently get lower care for FMS, even GP says it should be middle rate but hey, got a review soon so hopefully get it sorted them

Yes. I can see that there would be cases where it would be possible but I just meant that it wouldn't be suitable for someone who really can't cook or clean or walk independantly to help in any of these practical ways with a disabled child. I presume the circumstances would be thoroughly checked out before it is awarded anyway.

    Good luck with your review!
  • I never knew that! I thought if you were in receipt of higher rate DLA you would not be seen as able to care for another person especially if someone gets carers allowance for you.
It's really not that unusual for a couple BOTH on HIGH RATE CARE to claim and recieve CA for each other.

If you think about it one person can be mentally in need of care but physically capable and the other could be mentally sound but physically incapable. So the one with the brains but without any physical strength does the organising, planning, supervision and the one lacking mental capacity but with physical strength does the actual physical work.

I think what others are saying is that if you could "watch" over your daughter to see that she wasnt in any danger etc;. But if you are Mentally and Physically unable to assist her if she did need help whislt you were watching over her, then you couldnt claim Carers Allowance. The whole system is a maze to me but I did learn something.LOL
Hope you can get the help you need. Perhaps it might be worth your wife making an appt with the Princess Royals Caers centre for some more advice.
As a footnote and aftethought you say your daughter is Epileptic, has she any other disabilties or could she claim the carers allowance for you.

  • When carer's allowance is awarded, no account is taken of the quality of that care.

I am aware of a couple, with similar conditions, who each receive high rate DLA care, and carer's allowance (to care for each other). Seems crazy to me, but them's the rules.
Is there a ........... minimum time he helps with caring
    35 hours/week.

  • Thought this might clarify things a little about 2 people on High Rate DLA and each claiming for looking after the other. Only 1 recieves the payment the other "carer" gets a credit for it. I.e. for Council Tax etc; it is registerd as the person being entitled to Carers Allowance but does not actually recieve any of the cash!

Can you please indicate where you found the above 2 pieces of information. As far as I know (and other posters have suggested) neither statement is correct

From the Carers Centre as I needed the information for some eldery realtives.
It was deemed that they could "technically"claim carers allowance for looking after each other. But Only 1 of them would actually receieve the benefit.
In that case one had broken hip and the other severe arthritis. Its what we were told and what they were then awarded following a visit from the Pension Service.

That's interesting. I'll try and check the rules once I'm back at work tomorrow.

Carer's Allowance can be claimed by more than one person in a household, such as a couple caring for each other.
