He recieves all his loans &grants for uni. if he applied for CA would this affect him finacially ie would he be worse off .many thanks in advance for any replies thank you

    Hello

I'm afraid you can't claim carers allowance if you are in full-time education. However, they class this as '21 hours of supervised study', so if your son got a letter from the university saying he receives less than this he MIGHT be able to claim.

However, they may not be keen to do so, because many universities argue that essay work etc is 'supervised' even when it isn't. I only did 8 hours that was truly 'supervised' but the university argued that my course was a 36 hours-per-week course.

Benefits are usually disregarded when the fees, loans and grants are calculated.

Because it is a more complex situation than it appears to be, I think the best course of action is for your son to ask at the university if there is an advisor who could help him. At my university this was the senior tutors' office.

Finally, the university may have its own system for financially supporting students with carers' responsibilities. Again, he needs to ask them about this.

    Is your daughter an adult?

Well he is at uni for approx 20 - 25 hrs per week, The rest of the time he is at home helping my wilfe look after us( i dont know if you mean overnight care as well ) Is there a maximum limit to how much time he is allowed to spend at UNI ? or a minimum time he helps with caring ? Yes my daughter is a adult

Can you not claim carers for your daughter? I have a feeling that even if you are in recent of DLA for yourself you can be a carer for somebody else.
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!
  • I dont think your son will be successful in claiming Carers whilst a full time student. They do not accept the night time care so his and your best bet is for him to contact the Student Support Services at college to see what help advice they can offer.
I am not sure about you being able to claim carers for you daughter as I think the fact that you receive DLA and someone claims carers allowance for looking after you would obvioulsy exclude you from this.
I dont know if your wife attends or has any contact with the Princess Royal Carers Centre. They could help organise some respite for your wife and also organise regular coffee mornings and meetings. They can also help and advice on benefit entitlements.

This is not correct. You can claim CA for someone else even if you receive DLA for yourself and someone else receives CA for you.

Yes you can claim. In fact the JCP recommended it to us if my care rate ever gets put up. I get DLA for fibromyalgia and I get carers for my daughter who also gets DLA for her behavioural difficulties and her epilepsy. If I had middle care rate my OH would get carers too as my carer.
Perfectly legal as my daughter needs watching over which I can do.

I never knew that! I thought if you were in receipt of higher rate DLA you would not be seen as able to care for another person especially if someone gets carers allowance for you.

well as I quote what the advisor at JCP told me..
Just because you can't get out of a chair by yourself, doesn't mean that you can't watch over an epileptic.
I currently get lower care for FMS, even GP says it should be middle rate but hey, got a review soon so hopefully get it sorted them
