I once applied to be a holder of a joint current account with Nat West. They asked, in person, to see my (British) passport, and refused to accept it since it had less than 3 months to go before expiry (and there was nothing I had they'd accept as a substitute - having not moved house for many years, my driving licence still doesn't have a photo). I went back the next day armed with printouts of their terms and conditions that said nothing about it needing a certain amount of time before expiry, but they had decided to relent, though pretending they were doing me a special favour by recognising a passport that would allow me to travel freely throughout the EU.

That was just a staff member being silly. Money Laundering regs require it to be valid at the point of application.

I have never possessed a passport. Went abroad many times on parents passports when that was allowed but had no need or desire to escape since reaching adulthood.

It has limited my current account and savings options on occasion but currently not a problem with Barclays BLME or Marcus during applications.
    Never trust a financial institution.

Still studying at the University of Life.

As I mentioned there are other reasons to have one, and in such turbulent times I would advise having one.
