Passport required for a large majority of Savings applications?

As title, do almost all saving/investment online applications require the user to have a valid passport?. Have tried to sign up to 2 different accounts and when i get deep into the application it asks for passport number and expiry date. My passport ran out in June and as im not going away anymore this year i wasn't going to renew until next year some time!

I've never been asked for a passport.
Are you an overseas citizen?
Or is this instead of a NI number (which can often be requested)?
If the bank has difficulty verifying your ID (not on electoral register?) then that also might explain it.0 -
No im a UK citizen, it was with Raisin UK (Zenith) 3 yr fixed, i also gave my NI before it asked for Passport
EDIT: just read this in their terms...
To purchase a savings account from Zenith Bank (UK), you need to provide the following
information:
• A valid email address which Raisin UK can use to send you confirmation of your
application;
• Your personal details including your name, date of birth and National Insurance
number;
• Your address and postcode;
• Your long passport number and passport expiry date;
• A UK mobile telephone number; and
• The details of a UK bank or building society account from which you will fund
your application0 -

its not asking for your passport.
The info it is asking for allows them to check the validity of your passport and can aid an electronic check passing.0 -

That is not surprising. Dormant accounts being reactivated (for use or closure) usually need identification.It doesn't say has to be current in the terms you quoted? Does the process accept the expired date?
An expired passport ceases to be a valid passport. So, no, you would not expect firms to accept an out of date one.0 -

When I did the same for an dormant online account I was requested to send in full paper ID in accordance with their usual ID requirements.
I used the usual of a solicitor certified photocopy of my passport plus an original of a bank/credit card statement.0 -
I note the OP isn't planning to travel and will renew next year sometime.
Personally, I would renew ASAP to head off any possible price increase (though it increased in March last year) , preparation for any unforeseen circumstances, and it's handy to have a back-up for of photo ID.
NB UK passports issued from October 2019 will have blue covers - which may be a good or bad thing for some.Free thinker.:cool:0 -
I once applied to be a holder of a joint current account with Nat West. They asked, in person, to see my (British) passport, and refused to accept it since it had less than 3 months to go before expiry (and there was nothing I had they'd accept as a substitute - having not moved house for many years, my driving licence still doesn't have a photo). I went back the next day armed with printouts of their terms and conditions that said nothing about it needing a certain amount of time before expiry, but they had decided to relent, though pretending they were doing me a special favour by recognising a passport that would allow me to travel freely throughout the EU.0
