Vast difference in quote/invoice

Hi all
I have recently had a new patio laid and I agreed a quote of £6100 for the work.
My builder has invoiced me £6900 saying that his estimate was under the sq Mtrs for the job.
He had quoted after measuring the area 39 sq mtrs but says he has laid 44 sq mtrs.
He did the measurements not me, I feel this is his problem. I agreed the quote and an prepared to pay this sum.
Where do I stand?

A quote is legally binding, an estimate is not.
If it really is a quote, pay them the quoted amount and nothing more.0 -
OP says Quote the says Builder says Estimate, As boo_star says. It needs clarifying before money paid.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Does the paper work say quote or estimate?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Are you ready to lose 5m2?0

personally if you feel you should pay a bit extra only pay for the extra cost of materials
£157 per square metre sounds like a lot for an extra 5 metres of tiles or brick and materials0 -
Many thanks for the advice, I have a quotation.
I am prepared to pay the quoted price, and will pay for the additional materials for the extra. I estimate this to be approx £200 this is based on £20 per sq mtrs for the slabs and the same for the base including laying.
I am waiting to hear from the builder as I have stated I will not pay an additional £800 for this extra work.
A quote is a quote for the entire job, if there is a mistake, that’s not really my problem.0 -
Email from the builder says quotation.0

Does the quote specify the 39 sq m he originally measured?0

But equally, if he's estimated for 39sqm and laid 44sqm; he can agree the quoted price and rip up the last 5sqm.
You're then getting what was estimated.0
