Tesco refusing to buy back currency

Options
Hi - anyone any advice? I ordered Kenyan Shillings online with Tesco in mid June, collected and was told I could bring back any unspent notes to be bought back. Also got an e-mail confirming this. Upon my return went into Tesco and was told the notes had been superseded by new ones, and were going out of circulation at the end of October, therefore can't be exchanged (anywhere). I find out that the notes were reprinted in May 19 and so Tesco sold me old stock, and didn't point this out. If I had been told I would have spent them. £250 down, complained to Tesco online who have been procrastinating for over a month and not getting anywhere. Are currency exchanges regulated/ by whom? Any ideas???

they are giving u the wrong information , I just checked and they will buy back any notes issued 1995 onwards

I work for Travelex ( Tesco work under there flag ) , I have checked the same program Tesco use for identifying the current notes they can buy and 1995 - 2003 - 2019 issues notes are still current

    what bureau was it

if not joy you could also try ASDA or Sainsburys if one is close to you with a FX bureau instore
the only ones they wont take are torn or ripped ones

  • Thanks so much. It was Tesco in Yeovil, though afterwards I went straight into Thomas Cook bureau to double check and they also said the same? Does this mean Tesco have sold me exceptionally old notes?

In future take your cash from an ATM in-country, ideally using a fee-free card (or use that to pay where possible). Less cost and be sure of obtaining current issue notes.

    Try their formal complaints route.
