Give it away. Then at least you have no future surprise liabilities.

I would still pay the council tax as I might live in a caravan on site which I suspect will be a lot more comfortable

All land has a value and is sellable - it is only agricultural

That will most likely generate an additional council tax charge for the caravan.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I have had enough and plan to abandon it to whatever - can anyone stop me - tough if they can.

Nobody can stop you abandoning it but the local Council can force you to immediately make it secure (or bill you if they have to do it.)

If the property remains empty for six months then the local Council may be able to enforce an "Empty Dwelling Management Order" which allows them to take it over and rent it out to people in need of a home.

Instead of abandoning the house why not get it cleared out, put the stuff outside, put a couple of posts on FB / freecycle / local newsagents / local shop card / rural auction and some photos offering it all free of charge, to who ever wishes to collect. Get your mates round to give to a hand to life it all out, put into one room anything you wish to keep.

What is left after a week or so, get a skip and get it gone.

Next get a builder round, to find out how much the roof will cost to fix, or for him to put a very large tarp. over it. Board up the windows. Make it weather tight.

Get an electrician round, ask again how much for a rewire / new sockets etc.

Ask around to see if anyone would like to purchase it off you, developers are always looking for land / properties.

It has to be worth something.

Like others have said the council will be after you for costs etc if you just wander off.

Do you have some where else to live?

If you want rid of it you can always put it to auction - someone will buy it to do up. People will and have bought shells without roofs to fix up. It's all about price.

If you do leave it obviously abandoned, then you're likely to run into issues with travellers/squatters/urban explorers/junkies, as well as any associated costs like cleanup and securing it.

But why is it the on Home under the Hammer do they say clutter is a no no?
Ignore daft tv programmes. Removing clutter makes a property slightly more saleable as some people expect to walk into a perfect home. There are many buyers happy to buy homes with defects. A week ago I was talking to a builder who is hoping to buy a particular run down property which he will renovate as a retirement project.
Invite a local estate agent to value the property. Then you will know what your options are with regards to selling it.

My house which I own outright is very large 4000 sq ft part 17 cent. it is a nightmare to heat as no central heating and hot water it leaks water from the roof and loads of water pipes, threadbare carpets and lots of fused lights.

I have had enough and plan to abandon it to whatever - can anyone stop me - tough if they can.

Get an estate agent over to value it, it won't cost anything, so just do it, and you will have more information than you have now.
