I had a similar issue with Netflix (UK) about a year ago. I have never signed up to it, never done a trial and never given them my card details.

I noticed that I had been paying for Netflix for various months. Like I say I have no idea how this happened. All I can think is that someone cloned my card and signed up, though why anyone would go to the bother of doing that I don't know.

Anyway, I rang them up and explained the situation. They checked the account and saw that nobody had ever actually watched Netflix on that account so they gave me a full refund.

The person on the phone was adamant that I must have signed up to it myself. I'm still sure I didn't but since they gave me a full refund anyway I decided that we'd agree to disagree.

My wife recently discovered Amazon US
Under my customer name it says
Well it won’t… It will be on your wife’s account.

Any other family members used amazon and had your wifes card details stored?
As amazon will default to the next card if they can't get a payment through on Prime.

Best way to trace these is speaking to Amazon. If they say they can't see it on your account. Give them other family members emails and ask is it related to these.
DPA is not a issue in the US.

Also people need to know that a expired/lost card can still be used for recurring payments . I have seen a expired card on a account still being debited 4 years after it expired and as far as Visa go it is OK.

  • Thanks but

We have checked all of the Amazon accounts within the family and that card is not linked to any of us nor are any Prime transactions.

The Halifax employee at our local branch insists there are no transaction I'D's and I don't see any on her bank statements, Amazon will not listen until we provide them ( hours on the phone and chat ) telling us they cannot search for the card number.

I was told to add the card to my wifes account then they can check transaction history however this is not possible as the expiry of the card was Aug 2018, they then sent us back to Halifax.

This is what we see on her bank statement:

19 Aug 19 DEB Amazon Prime US 12.99 VISAXR 1.20725
    CD 3526 17AUG19 10.76
    19 Aug 19 DEB NON-GBP TRANS FEE 2.99% CD 3526 17AUG19 0.32
    19 Aug 19 DEB NON-GBP PURCH FEE CD 3526 17AUG19 0.50

The 3526 is the expired card.

Who did the expired card belong to (ending in 3526)?
If it is not current either the bank will tell you or if look at statements of say 12 months ago online it might give you a clue as all debit card transactions show last 4 digits.

Is it possible that someone previously signed up to an offer of "free prime for a year", which has recently ended? This might explain why Amazon are debiting a card that is now expired.

You should think "an employee at [insert name of bank] or one of it's agents must have stolen the details.". If you tell your bank someone must have cloned my card then they'll say you didn't take proper care of it.

Free money not a good enough reason?

Amazon US accounts are a different login (possibly using the same details) than UK ones.

Sure? I don't have an Amazon US account, but I can login with my Amazon UK details. It shows my UK address, but it doesn't show my UK order history. So the two systems aren't completely separate, but not completely joined. It's possible you could be an Amazon US prime member, but not an Amazon UK prime member. I'm not a member of either, so I can't check.

I don't know why you may have gone onto Amazon US to buy something, but you can totally do it and they ask you about currency conversion and will ship to your UK address. You can check your order history on Amazon US to find out if there are any orders.

If US/UK prime membership is separate and they have your card and you placed an order on Amazon US, then I suspect it was one of those accidental prime signups (I feel foul to one a while back because of the way they color the buttons and write the text is designed to make you think you are saying no to signing up to prime even though you are saying yes)

Fairly simple - just tell Halifax these are unauthorised transacions on your account, you have never had Amazon Prime and request an immediate refund and a block on future payments.

Dont be fobbed off if they say to contact Amazon.

If they resist say that in that case you want to make a formal complaint.

Treat it in exactly the same way as if you had had a debit from Fred's Wok Repair Workshop, Singapore.

It took 3 days of going back and forth between Halifax and Amazon trying to figure this out ...

Then we followed 18cc advice and went for the fraud team, we don't recognize these transactions and the nice man did a full refund inc fees.

    Case closed thank-you all.

18cc's advice was undoubtedly the right route to go down, but challenging transactions as unauthorised will typically involve an immediate refund, but this can later be reversed if the merchant disputes it, so don't count your chickens just yet!

Yes ESK is correct in that if the Merchant disputes the chargeback then they can go back to the bank and say that you did sign for / order whatever product was involved

however this definitely has the advantage that by doing this you at least know who the Merchant is and hopefully some details which will enable you to track the Amazon Prime membership!

I would wait the 45 days before you say that. Amazon have that long to comeback and provide details.

If they do and they are your details. Expect to be redebited.

I agree with what you say but Amazon is so huge generating billions in revenue I don't see them coming back for something like this to be honest.
It would cost them more to chase than they would get.
