Wow - an outbreak of common sense at last ! :j
Shame they didn't scrap this crazy project entirely so that we could just have cheaper energy instead of every household being ripped off by £450.

But perhaps kicking it into the long grass means that it can be quietly scrapped later on. Fingers crossed !
If you want someone to blame for the smart meter rollout then blame those freeloading customers who generously use energy without submitting meter readings on time and then get the shock of the lives when X years later, they find themselves in severe arrears (after their meter has actually been read by a human). Energy companies aren't charities, they want customers to pay for the energy they use promptly and by having smart meters, they are able to do that. I'm perfectly aware there are savvy customers out there who always pay their bills on time and NEVER get into arrears but energy companies look at their whole customer base, not just the "I'm allright Jack" brigade.

This recent quote from a MSE poster proves my point:
I didn't realise I had to give meter readings as they never informed me of this :rotfl:

Had to laugh - a neighbour had "smarts" fitted earlier this year by Morrison Data Services - just seen that the van is back for the third time (to my knowledge) this morning!!

Are you sure they haven't changed from Tesco?

Did I read somewhare that Smart Meter installations have to 'inspected' annually?
  • Hi,

Does the new 2024 deadline mean that the extension also applies to requirement for solar panel owners to have a smart meter so that they can be paid for the power actually exported ?

And, in general, does the requirement apply to existing panel owners - i.e. I've had panels since 2011 - do I need a smart meter in the near future ?

    Cheers - Joe

Theres no requirement to have a smart meter when you have solar panels. You should have your own export meter to record the amount of energy generated.
  • I've been advised we can't have a Smart Meter as we have no connectivity, 2G, 3G,4G signal etc. (I don't know if that's right or not?) and we're in a very remote location - but that doesn't stop them trying to make appointments to fit one. They've made 2 appointments so far but no-one turned up so I assume they can't find us!

Pretty sure my last 'new' one (had several! not my fault long story) has been there over a year and no one has wanted to see it. I think it was early or mid Summer last year so its over a year now. Certainly it was 'the warmer months'

The previous meter was a "token/stick" prepayment one and they did come out to look at that at least once I can remember. If I was a cynic I'd suggest probably to check nothing untoward was going on with it as (at that time) I did not use very much electricity anyway which may of possibly attracted attention perhaps wondering why the use was so low. Completely genuine though. :)

Annual or perhaps (bi-annual or is it biennial? , every two years at most) inspections are probably not a bad idea to check no one has been 'playing' , I am aware the erm 'growing things crowd' probably do not appreciate these smarts for a few reasons I won't post here.

I have a generation meter, but no export meter. They measure different things.

In theory, a properly calibrated smart meter should be able to measure both import and export. But I know that the early smart meters rolled out by EDF were not calibrated for export. I expect that was done deliberately to avoid paying the correct amount for exports.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Smart meters are just a tool to allow higher charges. When everyone has a smart meter installed energy companies will be able to charge different rates at different times of day and demand, more at 9 am than at 9 pm, for example. This will make comparison between suppliers impossible and undermine the advice to switch to save cost. The eco argument is just a scam, who doesn't know that using a device costs money.

Whoops, you're not supposed to let the cat out of the bag ! You'll soon be accused of 'ridiculous hysterical scaremongering' (and worse), even though expensive Time of Day tariffs are already starting to appear.
Fancy paying up to 41.94p/kWh when you get home and turn on a Bulb ?

Given that a smart meter installation costs about £475 (£13.1bn divided by 27.6 million households) there's obviously more to the project than saving customers a paltry £11 per year (Not So Smart Parliamentary Report).

"time of day tariffs starting to appear "... TOU tariffs have been around for decades with Eco 7, Eco 10 and other complex TOU tariffs.
A smart meter TOU tariff appeared at least 4 years ago with British Gas and their free electricity weekend 8 hours tariff which was quite popular with their customers who preferred to be on standard tariff.
So long as we stay with a competitive market with 60 odd suppliers then there is nothing to be afraid of with TOU tariffs.
