  • Hi,

good :T, maybe stop all the annoying threads, 'Can I refuse a smart meter/ can xxx force me to have a smart meter, etc.'

Why are folks agin smart meters, are they also agin smart phones, smart tvs?

I got a cheaper dual fix by having them installed, just fit and forget.

Personally I'm not against true smart meters.......but too many people have meters installed which no longer operate or never operated in the first place:)

I'll be happy to have one when they are guaranteed to survive as a smart meter thru a switch to any of the approved Utility Cos.

As for the Govt. "announcement" - a fair bit of double speak - they are expecting still, for all to be "offered" a smart meter by end of 2020 - but are only expecting ~ 85% working installations by 2024!!

Regardless of whether you think they're good or bad, just do the maths. Are there enough trained/qualified installers, and how long will it take to increase their numbers? How many installs will require remedial visits to get the comms working? Every one of those is another installation or two missed.

And by the time we're getting to 2024, significant numbers of gas meters will be dying because their batteries are dead - more remedial visits, more new installations missed..... In fact has anyone worked out the annual man hours needed just to keep on top of the dead battery gas meter issue?

I see Gerry1 ,using "project fear " as usual hysterically claiming I am personally £450 down this year ,out of my personal pocket , has really flipped.
Project Fear does nt work Gerry, ask Barack Obama, A Canadian Bank of england boss Mark Carney , and a Chancellor of the exchequer ,George Osborne who all tried that method before the Referendum in 2016 thinking the electorate are stupid .
So who is paying that £450 then? The Magic Money Tree?
  • Further observation - its gone very quiet on the OTA? updating of SMETS1 meters and allowing them to be adopted into the DCC.

Have any successful commercial scale changeovers taken place yet??
I suspect not as someone would be trumpeting about it in the press by now:rotfl:
  • There was a pledge in the Conservative Party's 2017 election manifesto that every household and business would be offered a smart meter by the end of 2020 - and there is still that expectation.

The government is adamant that its targets are being met and that the new regime outlined on Monday does not amount to a let-off for suppliers.
    ...
The Minister for Climate Change, Lord Duncan of Springbank, said: "We remain on track for suppliers to offer every home a smart meter by the end of next year, but to maintain momentum beyond 2020 we are proposing strict yearly installation targets for suppliers from 2021.
    ...
But it is clear to gas and electricity firms that ministers have recognised reality and allowed them an extension. The new framework gives them until the end of 2024 to install smart meters in at least 85% of their customers' homes.
So does this mean we will all be offered a smart meter by the end of next year, but we only have an 85% chance of the appointment for it's fitment being within the next 5 years?

Will this government even still be in power come the end of this year, let alone next year?

I guess that will be all down to the opposition as to if they are prepared to stand for government. They've already refused twice this month alone, so far.

Had to laugh - a neighbour had "smarts" fitted earlier this year by Morrison Data Services - just seen that the van is back for the third time (to my knowledge) this morning!!

This is the kind of real world problem, that explains why I'm not chomping at the bit to get a smart meter.

My existing meters were installed 25+ years ago and cause me no problems at all. Twice a month I spend a couple of minutes taking a couple of pics and then logging the amounts online.

Installation of new meters would probably go fine, but why take the risk, however small, of repeat problems and hassle? To save 4 minutes a month? What am I going to do in those 4 minutes?

It was a wise person, who said "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". My meters won't be "broke" until they're actually broken, or until there is a very compelling reason to upgrade to SMETSX (whatever X may be at that time).

In the meantime I would encourage everybody else to get them installed asap. The more testing and debugging the better :)
  • Here the DCC saying the migration for SMETS1 will be complete by the end of the fourth quarter 2020 the smart meter deadline.
