Barclaycard - credit balance refund problems

Earlier on in the summer, I received a letter from Barclaycard informing me that my account was in credit and since the rules don't allow this, they'd enclosed a cheque for the relevant amount . The letter also stated that if the cheque wasn't cashed by January 2020, then the funds would be automatically paid into my current account.

It's not very convenient for me to visit a bank, so I called Barclaycard and asked if they could pay the money into my current account straight away, but was told that this wasn't possible as the cheque had already been issued.

A couple of weeks on, I eventually got round to visiting the bank and paying the cheque in. I was surprised, then, when some days later, I got a letter from Barclaycard which said 'Thank you for letting us know about your cheque, here is the replacement' and attached a cheque for the exact same amount the first cheque had been issued for.

Confused, I called Barclays up and told them that I'd never contacted them to request a replacement cheque and wanted to know why it had been stopped and a new one issued. They weren't able to tell me, but said they would open an investigation and inform me of the outcome by September 2nd. That date came and went, and I didn't hear anything.

So, I paid the second cheque into the bank, and then on Friday came home to a letter from the bank this time - not Barclaycard - saying the cheque has been stopped. The reason given was 'Payment Stopped'.

I've spent an interminable amount of time on the phone to Barclaycard on Friday evening and on Saturday, recounting the chain of events to various call handlers, but, thus far, am still none the wiser as to why two cheques have now been stopped after being presented to the bank, and no idea if, or when, I'll actually get the money owed to me.

Is anyone able to shed any light on what might be happening?

You haven't mentioned what happened to the first cheque - was it returned/stopped too?

This sentence reads as if "it" refers to the first replacement cheque.

In your first post you stated that you had paid-in the original cheque and made no mention of it being stopped:
A couple of weeks on, I eventually got round to visiting the bank and paying the cheque in.

In any case you need to raise a complaint with Barclaycard about its inability to refund your money; there's no need to attempt to understand the reason for Barclaycard's incompetence.

Yes, I'm attempting to have it investigated, but I've still not had an explanation to the first cheque being stopped, nearly two weeks on from their deadline.

Whats betting the rep you spoke to on the 1st call thought that as you were asking for the amount to be paid into your current acc, that you had lost that cheque and stopped and replaced it.

Are you aware that you can pay in cheques @ a post office or scan it via the mobile app. No need to visit a branch.

I don't think the rep got that impression as I made it quite clear what I was asking for, and there was no sense at the time that she misunderstood.

I tried to pay the cheque in at the post office but was told I would need a paying in slip that they don't provide, so that was the end of that.

I don't do mobile banking so that option is out for me.
