Talk about missing the point....
My attitude was a response to your post. I am extremely grateful to the posters who offered advice. If we had purchased the product from a less reputable source I would have been extremely suspicious.
Why on earth would think I have one up on you for getting a refund ? I obviously have missed the point. You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -

Your 'attitude' comes from you. Don't try to blame anyone else for your reactions.
You missed the point in that I was stating that you did not install the product at all, but simply utilise the Product key code, within your existing product.
I made no comment on how much you paid nor from whence you bought it.
My point was that we could have advised you that all you needed to utilise was the product key code or nothing at all.
So no need to worry about sources, as you would not be installing anything to your PC in any case.
The other thing is the number that you called. Likely nothing to do with the product you tried to install. Unless you think that Norton staff are trying to scam you
So what are you going to do now? This is my point. You have a resource here. Use it, before making suspect decisions.
Ask questions beforehand.
If you find my comments patronising, that is your issue.Try changing your perspective.0 -

Thank you for your advice. As previous posters have said, I don't need to buy an antivirus so will install one of the recommended free ones.
I am wary about posting on here as I do have limited technical knowledge and don't want to made to feel like a fool. Unfortunately your original post had exactly that effect. You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -

If you feel like a fool.....
Get over yourself, swallow your pride and ask questions. Otherwise you will only be posting here after you have made your next blunder.
We are here to help. I don't care about your feelings. This is a board for solving technical issues. Not to salve your emotions. (hugs)0 -

That's fool X 2 then...as I renewed our Norton in August and until just now, I didn't know that Windows 10 included antivirus either!! DOH!!!!
Only paid £15 for the basic package though....so not too gutted. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -

Anyway, thanks for the advice.
Indded, most stated to just use the inbuilt security.
But it sounds as if you should clean up and lock down your device. How was he able to control your device remotely?
I guess it's best for someone else to help you. I would not want to make you feel uncomfortable by telling you what to do.0 -

This poster did. Windows 10=use defender. Earlier Windows version=use a freebie.
Of course I may also be a fool and be in line for a load of unpleasant responses. C'est la vie.I don't care about your feelings.
Clearly. Some posters help without all the aggressive baggage as OP has noted.0 -

You might be. But that has nothing to do with this issue. Perhaps you could leave your baggage off the topic.0
