Eon electric debt

Hello, I need some help I feel like my electric bills are going to be the death of me soon.
I was originally paying £57 a month direct debit for my electric. I didn't realise I had to give meter readings as they never informed me of this, baring in mind it's my first flat.I had a bill come through saying I have an outstanding balance of £328...
I have been in this flat for about a year now. At first they were just estimating my usage so I gave them the meter reading and they said It is correct. So they said they have estimated I use £95 a month for electric so said if I pay £103 a month them the £95 is for my current usage and the rest is to pay of the debt (48months).

Yes I know that I don't use anywhere near that amount seen as me and my partner work full time and are barely ever home.
So I decided to get a smart meter put in. I can see clearly what I am using now, brilliant. However, she said over the last 3 days I have used £24. Despite my meter reading telling me I have only used £3.78 in the last 3 days. So I asked how she got that amount when clearly my smart meter is telling me what I am using. She then came up with £5 a day for the last 3 days however, it was officially put in at 5pm on the 10th ot is now 7pm on the 13th so how we can use that much a day in that period I don't know. She said she will write a complaint for me because ididnt understand why my smart meter was clearly drastically wrong by miles.... She was then putting me through to a manager. However she hung up, i rang back and spoke to someone else. this new person told me no notes were made and a complaint was more filed. This person told me I use £3 at night and £4 in the day so let's say £7 a day in total for 28 days is £196!!

I thought that the smart meter was to tell you what you are using... but I am wrong aparently. Surely this is wrong when my friend had a smart meter with edf and she has only used £11 this month and pays exactly what it says and She has a 3 bedroom house amd pays maximum of about £40 a month.

iam now in debt I can't even afford to eat properly because they keep raising the bill. Are they having me on, please help me.
    Thank you

When i moved in I phoned eon told them I'm a new tenant and the current reading from that date. It was already with eon when we moved in so just continued with the same supplier already set up. The person who installed the smart meter did not leave any card or anything the meter readings that were previously taken has been removed from my account and set back to 00000. like I said, I was not told I had to give meter readings, no information on that no letters etc. I didnt know so did not give one.

sorry very new to this site.

Hello kels366 and welcome to the Forums.

It's good you've had a smart meter fitted. This will help stop estimated bills. It sounds like the lack of meter readings before the smart meter was fitted led to a series of under-estimated bills.

This will have caused a catch-up bill once we had accurate readings and left a debt on the account. These catch-ups can come as a shock as they lump more usage than would be expected into a shorter period of time. Keep talking to us about a payment plan to spread the debt over a more manageable period.

Some good advice on here already - thanks all. As Robin9 says, it's likely we'll have started you on our standard tariff. This has no restrictions leaving you free to change tariff/supplier without penalty. There are more competitive deals around both with us and with the other suppliers. Pop your details on to the independent Price Comparison sites to see what's available.

As Ectophile says, to work out how much your electricity is costing please use the unit rate and the actual usage. You'll need to add the daily standing charge and VAT.

Monitors don't include VAT. Depending on the type of monitor, some don't include the standing charge. We're working to put this right. Also, if you've a two-rate Economy 7 meter, the display will only show the reading currently being used. When the usage changes to day/night the reading shown on the display will change too.

The best way to keep on top of things is by popping readings (from the meter) on to an online account regularly. This will show how much you're spending on electricity. You can also create your own bills if this will help.

The smart meter will help make sure future bills reflect the amount of electricity being used.

A flat - how do you kinow that the meter you are paying for is the actual one supplying your flat?

Have you checked the serial number on the bill is the same as the one on the actual meter - you might be getting billed for someone else's usage.

I think you need to not get you mum to do this for you and learn how to do this yourself.

It is a harsh learning curve admittedly but you need to learn from your mistakes.

Have you got an immersion heater that has been left on?
