Eon electric debt
Hello, I need some help I feel like my electric bills are going to be the death of me soon.
I was originally paying £57 a month direct debit for my electric. I didn't realise I had to give meter readings as they never informed me of this, baring in mind it's my first flat.I had a bill come through saying I have an outstanding balance of £328...
I have been in this flat for about a year now. At first they were just estimating my usage so I gave them the meter reading and they said It is correct. So they said they have estimated I use £95 a month for electric so said if I pay £103 a month them the £95 is for my current usage and the rest is to pay of the debt (48months).
Yes I know that I don't use anywhere near that amount seen as me and my partner work full time and are barely ever home.
So I decided to get a smart meter put in. I can see clearly what I am using now, brilliant. However, she said over the last 3 days I have used £24. Despite my meter reading telling me I have only used £3.78 in the last 3 days. So I asked how she got that amount when clearly my smart meter is telling me what I am using. She then came up with £5 a day for the last 3 days however, it was officially put in at 5pm on the 10th ot is now 7pm on the 13th so how we can use that much a day in that period I don't know. She said she will write a complaint for me because ididnt understand why my smart meter was clearly drastically wrong by miles.... She was then putting me through to a manager. However she hung up, i rang back and spoke to someone else. this new person told me no notes were made and a complaint was more filed. This person told me I use £3 at night and £4 in the day so let's say £7 a day in total for 28 days is £196!!
I thought that the smart meter was to tell you what you are using... but I am wrong aparently. Surely this is wrong when my friend had a smart meter with edf and she has only used £11 this month and pays exactly what it says and She has a 3 bedroom house amd pays maximum of about £40 a month.
iam now in debt I can't even afford to eat properly because they keep raising the bill. Are they having me on, please help me.
Thank you

Let's go back to when you moved in.
Did you ring the existing supplier and give them meter readings ? Did you then ring Eon to initiate a switch ? What were the meter readings when you switched and what is the tariff /
What was the meter reading when the Smart was installed ? It would be on a card left behind by the installer /
Why between when you moved in and when the Smart was fitted did you ever provide Eon with meter readings ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

Kels, how many rooms do you have in your flat? Are you all electric, or do you have gas?
Do you have any parents or friends nearby that can help and explain things to you as you need to have a basic understanding of what energy you use, how you use it, and how the energy companies charge and bill you for it.0

The meter only knows how much electricity (or gas) you are using, not what it costs. You can multiply that by the pence per unit for your current tariff to find the actual cost.
Any cost display on your home unit will only be correct if someone tells it the correct price per unit.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0

When i moved in I phoned eon told them I'm a new tenant and the current reading from that date. It was already with eon when we moved in so just continued with the same supplier already set up. The person who installed the smart meter did not leave any card or anything the meter readings that were previously taken has been removed from my account and set back to 00000. like I said, I was not told I had to give meter readings, no information on that no letters etc. I didnt know so did not give one.0

My flat is only 1 bedroom and I liveeith my partner. It is just electric no gas. my mum is going to see if she can ring them tomorrow as she does not understand either as to why they think I must pay over nearly £200 a month when I am never home. Don't use tv as don't have the time so onky think that runs constanctly is an undercounter fridge

Mistake number 1 - the tariff when you moved in would have been Eon's Standards (ie expensive tariff)
From your first bill what was the opening reading ? Are you on E7 in which case there will be 2 readings.
If Eon will speak to your Mum (they may not as she is not the account holder) ask them what was the meter reading when the old meter was taken
PS If you never give meter readings expect confusion re your bills
PPS What is the name of the tariff you are on?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

Kels, if your mum understands these things better than you and wants to phone EON just ring them up with your mum next to you and request that it is noted on their system that you authorise your mum to speak on your behalf on the account. That's what my daughter did with me and EON now accept calls from me for her account.0

How did your mum/you get on when you spoke to Eon ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

How is the flat heated? (If storage heaters, do you know how to use them?)
How is water heated? Is there an immersion heater switched on 24/7?0

I know people don't always read them but your T&Cs will have almost certainly stated that you must submit meter readings twice a year as a minimum.
The bills you will have received will have also made it obvious it was based on an Estimated reading and quite often the supllier sill add a note suggesting you submit one.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
