Exact same thing happened to me.

As the OP I followed the instructions on VW website only for the download to fail and even though it said it had made a backup the card was not recognized.

Looked into it on the internet and there seems to be a security feature built into the SD card and if you format the card (even though VW website tells you to) you lose this security feature and as such head unit will not recognize the card.

Ended up buying a replacement from ebay, lesson learnt.

    From VW site:-
    Preparing the SD card
    • Push the switch on the SD card to “Unlock”. Now insert the SD card into the SD card slot on your
    computer.
    • Delete all files on the SD card or reformat your SD card. There should not be any other files on
    the SD card

  • JGB1955 - it’s my first newish car I should have expanded on the last comment sorry 😐 , I wanted all the mod cons, sat nav was one of them,, I know full well I can have maps on my phone - apologies

Howlsatthemion - whilst sending an email to the executive suite I have pointed this out to them that I am not the only one, but maybe the only one to have emailed to make a point.

I ended up buying new one from VW rather expensive lesson to learn and won’t be doing it again as they update every 6months, I have suggested which won’t be taken on board that they should implement a department for customers to have it updated - they probably haven’t because it would cost so much because they are aware of the issues 😫😫😫
  • VW site gives you two options to download updates one with the original genuine VW SD card or with a non-genuine SD card. After the failure of the genuine VW card I tried with a band new SD card after 4 hours of downloading and unzipping tried the card and you've guessed it "card not recognized".

Good luck with your email, hopefully you will post back if you get any reply.

You don't have to update it. I own a VW the same year as yours and I've never updated it and it still works just fine.

Since 2016 there have been 5 road / map updates, they are updated every 6months, when I was making my journey it was telling me I was off-road when I wasn’t, it wasn’t updated to incl the new part of motorway.

This was one of the reasons for updating, I can say I won’t be doing it again... trying to update it

Buying a car for the Sat Nav isnt really a good reason, the Sat Navs end up not being supported a few years later, thos is why a phone is better.

Same analogy is with smart tvs, the apps dont get updated a few a few years and stop working, if you buy Fire Stick, Roku or Now TV the apps work for much longer than with a smart tv.
  • Dcfc79 - I did correct my msg, and say it was one of the reasons to have included.

Sorry if it made it sound like it was just the sat nav !♀️
