How much broadband do I need???

Hello,
I'm just about to move into my property and need to set up some internet. I have to go with Fibrenest as it's part of the contract however I'm slightly baffled as to how much speed I actually need.
It's just me on my own and would mostly consist of streaming, some downloads (tv/movies) and occasionally working from home.
I was advised that the lowest package of 10mb was enough but it just seems really low. Any suggestions??

My SD lives on her own and uses wifi for netflix, social media etc and says 10 Mbps works for her. Does it give you an estimate of the 'true'speed you'll get - 5Mbps is the minimum really for decent streaming.
Edit to add, I work from home and find a fibre connection is more stable for using on a VPN and drops out less0 -
What are you streaming .0

Some streaming services require a 2Mb minimum , although that’s probably at standard definition, TBH 10Mb probably would be OK as long as you don’t have multiple devices on line at the same time, but it’s possible that ‘fibrenest’ may well have you and your neighbours all effectively sharing the same spine fibre , so throughput performance may not be just your bandwidth requirement but the aggregate of all users, but as you are tied to using them ( unless mobile is a realistic alternative) you could start low and increase speed if neccesaray ( which should be achieved via a few keystrokes at Fibrenest’ HQ , if you request it) at an increased cost of course.0 -
Mine is sub 2MB.
I use it for surfing the Internet, going on Facebook, checking the news, doing a family tree online. Then there's househunting, which needs me to use Streetview to find the house and go to aerial shots to decide. If a plane goes over I load flightradar24 to see what/where it's going.
I also watch a bit of telly on it. BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, UK channels, Youtube.
Most of the time there's no buffering at all, sometimes, when it drops to closer to 1.5MB it might halt and suggest I try again. If I press the button to try again it's never yet failed to continue.0 -

As long as you're not expecting UHD streaming and you do in fact get a solid 10Mbps (as opposed to 'up to' 10Mbps) then you should be fine.0 -
Do you game whether PC or console ?
Is it just yourself in the property or a +1 and kids ?0 -
If you mainly use it for Netflix and Amazon video expect to use in excess of 1Gb for every hour of streaming at the highest quality. 2.5Mbps is needed for streaming. If you want to be certain you can stream ask your provider the speeds you would get as a minimum from each speed.
I have up to 76Mbps speed but only get 43Mbps and I can stream as much as I like as it's unlimited.
One tip don't just get the highest speed to be certain of being able to get the streaming get the lowest speed for your needs as the higher the download speed you opt for the more it costs you per month. You can either watch a film or listen to music you cannot do both together although the speed of the connection would let you.You could listen to music while reading emails or surfing a forum.Someone please tell me what money is0 -
Is this FTTP and is this part of the deal moving in to the new property?
Had a look yesterday at Fibrenest depends what you want or need bare in mind there will be periods of slower activity and packeting.
On LLU at 1.7meg on a good day i couldnt even watch non HD youtube without 70% buffering.
FTTC i pay for sub 38meg but have it lifted free to 76meg of which i get 53meg. Thats ok for 2 of us to stream Netflix HD and the better Amazon HD plus record BT without buffering.
Personally i would go the 20meg route, little difference in price but check the fine detail and whether unlimited.0 -
Hi all,
Thank you for your replies! It is just me living there, no children so the chances of streaming a movie and listening to music or something is unlikely.
I'm not a gamer either so it sounds like 10 would be suffice and then potentially work increase if needed.0
