Which hosting company is recommended (there are 1000's)
presumably there is some guarantee that the host will exist for a number of years ?
Rent a low powered virtual server on Amazon EC2 (who will be around for a number of years) running your linux distro of choice (e.g. debian), install your preferred MTA (e.g. exim, postfix, qmail, other MTAs are available), integrate Spam Assassin and Clam AV, use the sanesecurity definitions, then install a POP3 or IMAP server (e.g. Courier or Dovecot) and get an SSL certificate from letsencrypt.

Everything will be fully configurable that way by editing configuration files as it will be your server, you won't be dependent on options that a hosting company offers.

^ Definitely not recomended for people without the technical knowledge.

If you have your own domain, it doesn't matter if the email provider you are using goes down in the future (as long as you have a local copy of all the emails) as you can just swap to a new provider.

If the domain provider disappears, then you can just contact the central body for the domain (e.g. ICANN or Nominet) and they will resolve it.

Of course. But you have to recall the previously stated experience of the person asking the question, so I tailored my response appropriately.

The OP should have no problem implementing that excellent suggestion.

My response was just for if anyone else was reading this thread that are looking to do a similar thing, but maybe don't have the technical knowledge. Your idea is better, but I just wanted other people to know that it isn't the only solution.

Personally, I'd rather be the one that has to fix things if there is a problem, becuase I know I can get on it right away and not wait on a third party.
  • I have been using 1and1 now IONIS for the past 10 years with my domain. First year is normally 99p and then approx 35- 10 after that. I also use their web service which gives me unlimited email forwarding and 5 accounts with virus protection. For this its about 69p a month.
    Hope this helps

Funny should say that Ben was with M247 for over a decade £36 hosting per year. Domains can be registered for at least 3 years another +£.
Changed to 1and 1 Ionis April, first year costing £1 per month including domain registration which expired end of March i havent renewed or i should say i havent paid all i had to do was tell previous t move the pointers.
Problem is i have to send and retrieve emails direct on the server which is often very slow to log in and log back out to get at other email addresses. Customer Sevice is very good if you speak foreign language and to this day 5 1/2 months on cant get Incredimail working wgich retrieves all every 5 mins saves logging in.

I moved from and closed down my GMail account after more than 20 years of use, very smooth process.

Can recommend Gandi (https://www.gandi.net/) to buy your domain name. May not be the cheapest but the service is fantastic.

I also use the paid service from Fastmail (https://www.fastmail.com) I was sceptical about paying for an email provider but the feeling you get of being with a private provider is worth every penny of the $5 a month (I don't use Google for anything where possible)

Adding your domain to Fastmail is easy

    Never looked back.

I've had my own personal domain and hosted email for almost 20 years. Whenever it comes up for renewal I will review the options - I used to have a lot of webspace back when I had visions of starting my own online business but now I just have email only.

I still use Gmail as backup as I'm so integrated with Google services. I presume I also have an email address through my ISP but I've never even logged into it.
