I currently have an ancient gotadsl email - a legacy Nildram (pre-talktalk business) address, and am concerned that, at some point in the future - this legacy account will be closed down (it is currently free !) - so am looking at alternatives.
I could use Gmail but would be interested in purchasing my own domain
If I do this - My wife can also benefit from a new email address
but do I get antivirus/ filtering etc etc as standard ?
I would presumably have to buy a domain for, say 10 years ?
What happens after 10 years (if I am still wanting email) - does the price ramp up or is it set at a decent level ?

Domains are registered for 1 or 2 years. At the end of the period you get to renew it again for whatever the current renewal price is. If you don't renew then somebody else can buy it..
You do not get hosting with a domain unless you buy a package. The AV/filtering will be dependant on the hosting that you buy.0 -

OK say I register a domain for 2 years (@ £2.99 per month or whatever) - what is to stop them from doubling or more the costs after 2 years as they have a captive customer......?
Which hosting company is recommended (there are 1000's)
presumably there is some guarantee that the host will exist for a number of years ?0 -
You can transfer domain hosts quite easily if the price shoot's upEx forum ambassador

Not sure
Last time I bought a domain the email accounts were free with antivirus protection. I used my own host.
I wouldn't use a specialist email hostEx forum ambassador

Presumably - if I choose an email only domain (eg Protonmail) - I am stuck with the company who set up the email in the first place ?
Yes, because you'll be using a Protonmail address. No difference from your current (former ISP) email address.
If you have your own domain though you can set it to use Protonmail as the mail server (if you are using a Protonmail paid plan).A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
Thanks

I've been renewing domains for years, must be at least 15 years now, and they've not gone up in price much. I've never had to change provider (there probably are ones that would save me a few pennies but it's not worth the hassle for me) but I could if they hiked their prices.
You may not get virus scanning and filtering, it depends on your setup and providers, but you can use free gmail to access your own domain email addresses if you want, so you can use their usual offerings.0 -
I use my own domain, and I use forwarding to my gmail account. So mu email is my-name@whatever.co.uk and I forward this to my gmail account. I don't use or pay for any email hosting or facilities, I let Gmail, or Yahoo, or Hotmail handle that.
The people who see my-name@whatever.co.uk never see my Gmail email address so it looks good.
I use Fasthosts and it's really easy. On top of that you can create a mailing list by assigning more than on forwarding address.
All you need to do is buy (rent actually) a domain that suits your needs.
Good luck0 -
I had a gmail email address blocked for soime reason. Created a new one to use Bluestacks, never used for anything else so only checked it every week or two, asking them why its blocked got an automated reply giving no information at all.
Made me wonder what would happen if that was my banking email.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
