LCD TV Buying

Hi everyone.

Could someone enlighten me to the technical jargon i'm faced with while looking to buy a new TV?

I'm looking on currys website at a 32" toshiba & philips in the techy specs it says "flat screen - yes/no" well i thought all flat screens are flat screen or am i missing something?

Also is it a good idea to get flat screen? the philips is flat the toshiba isn't, also widescreen the toshiba isn't but the philips is, help me so confused

well as far as those things go you can just really judge for yourself cant you? personally i thought all lcd tvs were flat screen. you need to consider that the info cards next to them can have incorrect details sometimes. just look at the tv and decide whether you like the look of it. details that arent obvious are things like amount of different slots at the back and how high a resolution the picture is for hd. does it have freeview built in? do you want it to have freeview built in? those kind of things are worth thinking about. as far as brands go our previous tv was toshiba and it was very reliable. we have a lg now mainly because it was cheaper than the toshiba we liked. i dont know how good philips are because we have never had anything by them, although they are the same company as lg and the lg tv seems fine so far.

The Hertz refresh rate can be important if you watch sport. A 100Hz TV may give smoother pictures with fast moving objects such as football over what a 50Hz TV can do.

Connectors e.g Scart/HDMi/Audio & video connections are important depending on what you wish to connect - say DVD/Sky box/surround sound amp and speakers/digital camera/PC. More is generally better.

The ability to switch the aspect ratio from widescreen to 4:3/14:9/16:9/zoom is useful for old programmes in 4:3 to resize to a larger picture

I've a Panasonic 32LXD70 which is 100Hz and the picture is stunning with wildlife programmes.

AIUI lcd are described as 'flat screen' where as plasma can be either, but can be classed as flat screen due to their slim profile when compared against a crt (regular tv) which was infact slightly curved.

    HTH
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

Sounds to me as if Curry's haven't updated their spec categories, near flat super flat etc. were all terms used with the old CRT based TVs, some were more bulgy than others.
LCD/plasma TVs have flat panels, and don't shop at Currys/Dixons it only encourages them.
HD ready and a digital tuner are the two must haves. Can't go wrong with a decent make, Panasonic/Sony.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

regarding connection at the back if a tv has more than one hdmi connection then that is good for the future. sky hd, games consoles, hd dvd players, hd camcorders are just 4 things that use hdmi connection.

What's your budget? Which magazine recommended the Panasonic 32inch D70 as their best buy. I think you can find it for less than £600 on the net

LG is a good make and pretty cheap.

You can get a 32" LG on dixons website for £419. Im tempted to get one!
