Gas oven without ignition-is this legal?

  • When I was a student I had a gas cooker that you would have to check it was lit.

One day I was starting to make dinner and decided to go to my parents house for the weekend - train was leaving shortly.

I thought I turned of the oven but asked my housemate to check.

Turned out the oven wasn’t even switched on and the house was full of gas.

Anyone who thinks that automatic gas oven cookers should be the standard are wrong. Ideally the oven should be electric and the gas cooker should be one that lights with one hand on the nob.

Why don't you write and tell the letting agent you think it's dangerous...
That is the best advice (other than perhaps xylophone's). And it's much better advice than your own plan to
tell them tomorrow when they're back open. I want to make sure I'm prepared in case they refuse.
  • We have had 2 cookers that required a match or lighter to ignite the gas. There was (it could have changed) no legal requirement for the ignition on to cooker to work (this was in a rented propery)

It was fine. No issues what so ever.

the gas cooker should be one that lights with one hand on the nob.
And the other on the knob?
  • The hob seems simple and safe enough. It's more the grill and oven, having to stick your head into an enclosed space, whilst fiddling with a knob on the outside of the oven and then trying to light. That doesn't seem too safe unless I'm really stupid and missing something?

Look for the model and check online for a manual or just google the cooker model with 'ignition problem' or something similar. This might tell you what needs fixing. At the moment you don't know why its not working. It might be an easy fix. Even looking at similar makes of the model might give you a clue, something to look for to solve the problem.

The inspection report doesn't necessarily mean that the ignition hasn't been connected to electric supply, it could just mean the ignition isn't working and he couldn't be bothered to look as he's there to inspect it not fix it.
