BMW Good will update and info

So if you read my previous post, my story was about BMW UK paying for a new gear box in my 2015 plate one series (118) because the output shaft gearbox seal is leaking. They have actually offered to pay 80% parts cost , then i pay 100% of labour to do the work so in total BMW pay £3800 and i pay £1500 approx.

Anyway the main reason this is a good will gesture is because i didn't buy it from BMW (used car dealer who doesn't want to know) and the car has been fully dealer serviced since registration (due another service (2020).

My point to BMW was, does it matter where i bought it from? The vehicle has been serviced as per BMW instructions, at a BMW dealer and a gearbox seal should not fail on a 4 year old vehicle. It's not like its a part that can be abused or wrecked while driving the vehicle right?

I tried to ask them to pay the additional 20% part and i would pick up all the labour but they wouldn't budge due to the reasons i've just given. I know technically their not obliged to offer me anything but thats another discussion.

My final question is, would i be a horrible person to just sell the vehicle, part ex etc and not mention the fault? I would never sell it privately, i couldn't do that to someone.

I don't know whether to just sell it or pay for the repair.

Or get a new seal fitted for a lot less?
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • I asked BMW that very questiion, It's not a part that can be changed very easily it's built in at manfacture and because the oil was low there is already some slight damage to the gears.

Because the original post became quite long and people arguing about things, this is an easy to read update thread.
  • Its probably more cost effective just going with the repair than selling to WBAC.

An interesting statement from someone who, by their own admission, is trying to offload a car with a known and expensive fault. And what do you think WBAC are going to do with it? Oh yeah! They are going to sell it onto someone else.

Can't see the moral difference between you passing onto WBAC or directly onto a new owner. Either way you are stitching the new owner up with your problem.

You are getting a large part of the repair funded as a goodwill payment. Do the right thing and have the repair done and then decide whether you want to sell or keep it.

You wouldn't sell it privately because "I couldn't do that to someone".

So you think it's ok to stick a middleman between you and a private buyer? What's the difference?
  • Any company which profits off the misery and desperation of others is fair game in my book.

The difference is WBAC sell on to dealers or actions with the vehicle likely ending up on a dealers forecourt with a warranty. So i won't be taking any moral lectures from anyone here thank you very much.

Get off your high horse......or at least don't pretend you care about the next mug that buys it.
