I've married a bankrupt - what problems will this cause us?

My husband was discharged last year (if not already in 2004). I have no problems with his passed but want to know if it will affect us in any way.
I have bought a new house and we are moving. Can I put things in both names or do I need to keep everything in my married name alone?
Will it cause us any problems?
I have a very good credit scoring and never had problems with non payments of anything at all.
Many thanks for any help.

It shouldn't cause you any problems at this stage since he is discharged. If you already have the house in your name why do you want to add him to it?

it's not the fact of putting his name on the house but all the bills and insurance i'm worried about. He still can't upgrade his bank account so wondered if it'd affect us with anything else really.
So is the only thing to keep his name off my bank account so no 'joint' money or.....?0 -
Hi,
Its probably best for you to wait 6 years after his BR until his credit file is clear before you join up financially.

Without knowing your husband's backround, and the reasons that lead him to becoming bankrupt, I would personally keep your financial arrangement separate from his until the BR is clear from his file.
I don't wish to be uncharitable but you will be in the best position to know whether his previous debt problems may or may not revisit him.
I know a number of people who have sailed close to the wind with debt, some have been made bankrupt and some haven't. Some have been unlucky and some have been down right reckless, and never learn their lessons. There is no obvious correlation between the two samples.Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
it's been *just* over 6 years now (and one month i think). although he might have had the automatic discharge in 2004 (if i've read up correctly).
as i said my credit rating is good and never had any problems i just don't want his past to affect what we do together. As we're moving in a months time (new house in my maiden name as only just got married) i want bills etc in both names.... just don't know if this is ok really.0 -
It would be best to get a copy of his credit file by sending £2.00 to experian and call credit to see exactly what is still on file.
Just google credit reference agencies and you will get their details

If he has been tidy with money in that 6 years then join up. Check his credit file on Experian before you do so though https://www.creditexpert.co.uk to make sure its fallen off his file.
Kepp an eye on him too. As he will eventually have access to new credit that might just spur him into old ways..... Just keep an eye.0 -
My Mortgage company (A&L) wouldn't have a brankrupt on the deeds, they told me this when I went for the mortgage. They asked about any time in the past not just recently.
Bill wise, house/content insurance I got with Barclays but they would only do it in my name and he cannot claim on the policy. I was very clear and upfront about asking them and I went with them due to recommendations on this board.
I'm not sure about other bills. They are all in my name but I'm not bothered about that, in fact I'm actively mking sure I do not have any financial connection.

Make sure you check all 3 credit reference agencies and make sure the info they hold is correct.
Creditors can default the accounts, but it should be a single default dated NO LATER than the date of the bankruptcy order. The account should also be marked somehow to indicate it is satisfied/settled.
Go to the following link to see exactly how your Credit Reference Files and account info should have been correctly updated:
CREDIT REFERENCE FILE CLEAN UP – POST BANKRUPTCY
Then for the accounts that are not correct write the letter in the next link to their "data controller(s)" by recorded delivery.
Letter to former Lenders post Bankruptcy
If they then fail to update your account and records correctly, raise a complaint with the Information Commissioner:
How to raise a complaint with the Information Commissioner
If necessary the Information Commissioner will force them to update correctly, and even fine them heavily if they don't.
The process is a bit lengthy, but it always gets the job done.

I'm one of the unlucky ones who gets hammered by credit companies despite haveing a very good credit score and paying all my own bills on time. Everytime I apply for anything I get a standard reply of you are linked to someone with credit problems so I can't have the card/loan/bank account. It's not supposed to but it does.Barclaycard 3800
