New central heating system...is there much disruption?

Hello, I'm asking this on behalf of my sister who has recently moved into a rented house which has a hot air system of some sort which isn't working properly (several leaks) and the landlord is considering putting central heating in. My sister was wondering how much disruption there may be in the house as she has two young children and its a small house. If anyone has any experience of having a brand new heating system installed I'd welcome any comments on the disruption it caused. Thanks :)

  • Have you got any small heaters you can lend to your sister? she'll be needing them for up to a week while the workmen rip her house to bits, the floorboards will be up in every room upstairs, she'll have no gas for the entire time. She needs to stock up on water as well for the times the water will be turned off, she'll have no electricity at some point too while they do the wiring.

There'll be dust everywhere & all the bits of the old heating system will be out in the garden or street for most of the day they rip it out.

Of course if she gets a good group of lads doing the work they'll clean up after themselves. Can the kids go stay somewhere else while this is going on? would be a good idea imho.

PS ours was done in 4 days in the middle of January last year & we had to get them out again 3 times afterwards because it wasn't working properly, shoddy workmanship on the boiler not the fitters fault. It all works perfectly now, in fact it's too darn hot at times. :D

They already have some heaters left by the landlord so that's not too much of a problem. The house really isn't too big, so there isn't a lot of room to do things. Downstairs is wood flooring and upstairs is carpeted (there are only two bedrooms and a bathroom and downstairs its a walk-through kitchen-living room). The kids may be able to come hear and stay for a few days (one is at school during the day).

  • The wood flooring downstairs should be ok as they like to put the pipes along the skirting board & up the walls in corners but upstairs they will be lifting floorboards in all the rooms & in the hallway as the pipes go under, I reckon the biggest problem will be moving the furniture about & relaying carpets once they've finished.
