Away between Christmas and New year

As the title says, I'd like to go away between Christmas and New year, but am aware how expensive this might be!!

So does anyone have any suggestions of reasonable cost.
Not too fussed where, but if a Christmas market is still running it'd would be a bonus (love twinkling lights etc )
Big city maybe with some attractions, some history maybe.

Am a bit stumped, and need suggestions so I can then fiddle with dates and flights etc to work out best deal.

Poland is good value, whatever time of year. We've been to several cities at this time of year - just be prepared for it to be bitterly cold. You have to keep popping into bars/cafes to defrost - well that's our excuse;) but there are plenty to choose from.

Not sure of the dates for the Christmas markets this year, but several usually extend to 1st week in January.

NYE in hotels & restaurants likely to be pricey, but the days around are usually ok.

I used to go away every Christmas and/or New Year but the costs got so high that I haven't done it in the last 5 years. However this year I really feel the need to get away so I'm currently looking at Istanbul - it won't be warm but it's outside the Eurozone and 25 Dec is a normal working day.

Depends on which airport you'd be departing from, but I'd recommend Athens, Salzburg or Innsbruck.

I bet it will be warmer than here in the NE of England.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Another vote for Poland.
We went to the Wroclaw Christmas Market last year and it was great.
    (open until 31/12 this year)
The atmosphere is awesome, although it can be very crowded.
If you are fortunate enough to be there for the new year celebrations too, you will get a double whammy

We have visited a different Christmas market each year for around the last 5 or 6 years, and to date, Wroclaw has been one of the best.
(It's Bratislava this year, hopefully that will be a good one too)

Malaga is known for its Christmas lights that run until early Jan. Its a vibrant city with fantastic architecture and there should be plenty going on at that time.
Flights can be reasonable if you book early enough, and hotels can be cheap if you don't stay over new year. You could stay in Malaga or stay in nearby Torremolinos if you want it a bit cheaper.

Madrid. Warm, lots going on. Still has a Christmas Market (although not one of the best out there)
