    How worried should I be?
Probably secured by broken WEP encryption. You needn't worry much, providing you aren't accessing or entering private information on sites or in apps that aren't themselves encrypting your traffic.

You don't need to buy a Chromebook, just install Linux.

You are making the assumption that the OP knows
    (a) where to obtain a copy of Linux
    (b) what version of Linux he would be happy using
    (c) how to obtain, install & maintain Linux
    (d) how to do the above. Or is interested in learning to do the above

Unless he wants to do the above then he might decide its is worth buying a new chromebook from argos from £150.

Also with a Chromebook, updating of the operating system will be done automatically.

It isn't the 90s anymore. Plenty of Linux distros out there that are easy to use as Windows and don't require vast amounts of technical know how to make them work.

I transitioned away from Windows years ago. For a while I dual booted Linux and Windows, but was eventually driven away from Windows entirely because it became increasingly difficult and burdensome to keep it properly secured and maintained. I doubt all but a tiny fraction of the population would really know how how to keep themselves safe as a Windows 10 user today, and I don't count myself among those who do.

So what. The OP would still have to decide

    (a) which of these ease to use Linux they are most comfortable with and like the best.

    (b) Where to obtain a copy.

    (c) What they must do to kept it up to date & safe.

    The OP may not :-

    (i) have the time to do any of those things.

(ii) be confident or wish to do any of those things.

They may be happy just to buy a cheap Chromebook and be done with it.

Only the OP knows which of the two options they prefer.
