Untraditional xmas dinner...anyone else?

My kids are quite fussy when it comes to eating. My DS (11) doesn't eat *any* fruit or veg (unless I manage to disguise it) and DD (8) is getting fussier as she gets older. Neither enjoys a Sunday roast. With this in mind I decided it's not worth the stress (and waste) of cooking a Turkey dinner for xmas lunch, so I've told the children they can have whatever they want to eat on xmas day. I'm happy to make anything for them.

So far DD has said she wants Lasagne, I'll have Salmon and DS wants............

A microwave "Rustlers" chicken burger  UUURRGGH! YUK! I swear his taste buds aren't programmed right. They're disgusting. I could make him a chicken fillet burger....but no, he wants the rubbery, artificial microwaved taste. ACK!

Is anyone else opting out of a traditional xmas dinner? My ex FIL usually has a Chinese.

When I was that age if you would have asked me what I want it would have been a Pot Noodle. :rotfl:

Nobody really likes turkey here, and we have a roast dinner most Sunday's.

Last Christmas day we did an Indian banquet with different types of curries, rice dishes, naan breads and snacky bits - samosas, baji's etc. It was mainly all home made, and it was gorgeous.

This year my Dad picked so we're having a festive mixed grill, with the nicer cuts of steak, posh sausages etc. If it's a nice day, hubby is keen on BBQ'ing the food, but that will be a last minute decision.
Here I go again on my own....

LOL, we had pizza one year. For the last few years we've had roast though. No point in slaving over a hot stove for food you know they're not going to eat.

We are having the traditional turkey roast on Christmas day but for boxing day I am doing a seafood feast. Three small courses, scallops and black pudding with red pepper sauce, spagetti with mussles and crab crostini. We never buy seafood really because it s so expensive so it will be a real treat.

  • I would be happy with beans on toast but my family come here as my daughters both work full time and it gives them a rest at Christmas. Trouble is they love their roast but this year I am having a free range chicken instead of turkey as I do not enjoy eating this for days on end. Boxing Day is usually cold ham and salad in front of tv as hubby always goes to see Norwich F.C. play in afternoon and both my daughters are involved in local theatre groups and will be in panto. We are going to panto on christmas eve to see daughter no 2 so will not be:j spending all evening preparing veggies etc. Will have a take away and a bottle of wine. Sounds good to me.
  • I think that letting them eat what they want sounds like a lovely idea, even if it is a rustlers burger! We won't be having turkey, we will have chicken but that is as untraditional as we get. I love the idea of an indian banquet though, I don't think my H would go for it.

I love the idea of the Indian Banquet too. I might introduce this one year actually!

I think xmas dinner should be luxurious, after all, it's supposed to be a special day.

Why have turkey (that you're not too keen on) just because it's traditional?

If you're going to make the extra effort, make sure it's worth it I say.

Couple of past efforts here include t-bone steaks with dianne sauce etc, and lobster thermadore.
