Anyone know if my husband and myself can apply to rent privately in Uk before we return to UK next year as we need a house/flat to return to. We are both pensioners and have rented abroad for 15 yrs.Does the he law allow it or to we have to be back in the UK before we contact estate agents etc.I have looked for short term lets to stay in while we look but I the prices are crazy.I have emailed quite a few estate agents , no response. I also know not having credit history anymore won't help.Any suggestions?

There's no legal issue about it (assuming you have the right to live in the UK), it will depend on what people make of your creditworthiness.0

There are a number of Housing Associations that cater for over 55/60s.
It is usually easier to find vacancies than those that cater for families. We have lived in one for 18 months, it is first class, nothing is too much trouble.
If you are interested I will PM you the details0 -

It probably also depends on the area and whether EAs are used to dealing with people coming in from overseas who aren't here yet .
My colleagues from overseas (India, China, etc) never had problems renting London flats in advance through big estate agents like Foxtons, but often had to pay hefty holding deposits and higher fees. Plus all the documentation etc is done only once you come over.
Now that agents can't take more than 1 week of rent as holding deposit or any fees at all, I guess people in your situation might have to look at short lets to start with or offer 3-6 months rent in advance.Anyone know if my husband and myself can apply to rent privately in Uk before we return to UK next year as we need a house/flat to return to.
