Santander’s check and complaint policy

  • I think the answer is probably that people don't know.

Currently their website says "If you are unsure whether you had a PPI policy with us, you can contact us to check. If your check comes back positive and you wish to make a complaint about its sale, you can then move to complain. You must allow 8 weeks (40 business days) for your PPI check to be completed before making a complaint ahead of the deadline. "

(the bold and italics are my own emphasis)

I have taken that to mean that you must complain before the deadline rather than just check. However, that is simply my own interpretation.

Thanks for this info. Yes, I also read that on their website. So that’s why I posted about it. Because this website says otherwise and was wondering where Martin/money saving expert got this additional info from.

I’ve seen several posts which have suggested to get the SAR as this is the way you can get access to all the information the banks have on you. I’m not going to waste time going through all the forums and finding some examples. I don’t enjoy verbal warfare! (Although it seems a lot of users thrive off this). Anyway, thanks to some luck, I’ve put in my complaints today as Santander extended the deadline until 8pm.

Sending a SAR does in most cases give you some extra information, but nowhere on this site, or in the real world, does asking for one extend the time you have to complain.
Luckily you got in time though....

I didn’t say that I thought an SAR would extend the time I had to complain. I said I’ve read that it’s better to ask for an SAR (in addition to your check/complaint). In my opinion it’s better on two fronts 1) get more information (and it costs you £0). 2) makes the bank take you more seriously (and less likely to fob you off). An example of 2 has happened with me with RBS and HSBC. My first letters were not successful. As soon as I mentioned an SAR, they are now investigating several loans.

Sounds to me like, rather than "Fobbing you off" you didn't actually have any PPI.

Happy to be proved wrong in a few months/weeks ;)

Trust me, requesting a SAR does not make the Bank take your complaint more "seriously".

The Bank's complaint handlers won't even be aware that you requested a SAR!

As for "clutching at straws", only those complaining without knowing whether or not they had PPI are doing that .

Well, that’s what I Believe and let’s see what Happens. In regard to your last sentence, that’s a LOT of people (why do you think so many people did it last minute!?!)

The TV adverts had a lot to do with that of course.

As to anyone "complaining" about something they likely never had, well the least said about that the better.

People who didn't have the insurance will not be refunded something they never paid for in the first place.

Realise also that even having the insurance is not guaranteed to garner a refund if the policy was not mis-sold.
