    The untaxing can't be backdated.

OK so how does that square with the law that says tax is no longer transferred with the vehicle on change of ownership? Seems like there is a rule that can't actually be enforced then where the car still shows as taxed?

    It doesn't.

It says change of keepership. They're different. And the keeper doesn't change until DVLA record the change.

Reference please? Everything I've read says change of ownership.

Not driving the car because it's not taxed to you is just asinine. My only concern would be that the tax cancellation is tied in with RK change AFAIK. So if they still have the tax in effect then they havent transferred ownershop [or "keepership"] over.

Contact the previous owner and ask them have they sent off the change of keeper. Because they will get letters in their name for points, parking fines etc. (that should get their !!!! moving)

Everything you've read has been sloppy reporting. ;)

The V5 document only records registered keeper details. If I buy a car I'm the owner, but if I've bought it for my daughter and the V5 is in her name then I'm still the owner but as far as DVLA is concerned I don't exist as she would be the registered keeper.
  • The previous keeper/owner has sent paperwork off over a month ago, I know that because DVLA wrote to me early August and requested the VIN number and included a copy of the V62 that the seller sent in, hence we are all frustrated with DVLA taking so long.
Yes exactly keepership has not been transferred however receipts and application to DVLA show ownership was transferred back in July. Hence my concern that the car could be recorded on the road, and although still taxed by previous keeper, is not taxed by me. Hence as tax is not transferable on change of ownership, I could potentially get a fine. However in practice, as it shows up as taxed, is anyone ever going to know it has been used on the road?

If the old keeper had to send a V62 in, then they didn't have a V5C. Was it even registered in their name?

Or did they send the V5C in, not a V62 (which is a form to request a new V5C)?

Why request the VIN? Is the car not what the V5C said?

I said Long Story, I didn't want to go into all that.
Lets keep it to topic which is can I drive a car that shows up as taxed even though I didn't tax it?

    Have you tried ringing DVLA?
We transferred ownership of my Mother in Law's car to my daughter recently. However as the V5 could not be found we rang DVLA and arranged the transfer and tax over the phone.
