Bought car, DVLA shows it taxed still from previous keeper

Bought car over a month ago but DVLA are dragging their heels about sorting out a V5C for me so I can't tax, SORN or do anything with it as I don't have the relevant bits of paper (don't ask; long story). However it is still showing as taxed for a year to 2020 on DVLA website. So can I just insure it and drive it relying on the existing tax status so long as I check everyday that it is still showing as taxed?
(BTW I don't want to tax it until I have the V5C in case the previous keeper were to get a tax refund from the tax I buy before DVLA have changed the registered keeper over. Apparently this is a scam that can and does happen and leaves the new keeper back at square one with no tax; possibly unaware thier car is untaxed and likely to get clamped.)

You can’t drive the vehicle if it is not taxed by you. You can register that you’ve bought the car online with the DVLA.0

Do you not have the V5c/2?
Not sure about insurance, I'm normally asked if the vehicle is owned by myself and registered to me (or words to that effect). Can you answer that truthfully?0 -

Makes little to no difference as long as you are truthful.
I just renewed my policy for a vehicle that I neither own or am registered keeper for. The price difference was zero when I changed those details to myself out of curiosity0 -
You can not pass tax on, as soon as you buy it, it is un-taxed. The previous owner will get a refund from any full months from the end of the month he sold it. You will be liable for any tax from 1st day of the month you bought it.0

Yes I understand that technically it is not taxed but practically it is showing up as taxed so in practice it should not get flagged by ANPR or the police; would it be fair to say that? DVLA site says it is taxed and 'tax is not due'
(no I can't tax it; no valid paperwork at all)0 -
The reason it's showing as taxed still is that it's still in the previous keepership. DVLA haven't received or processed the change of keeper notification.
How did that get done? I presume the previous keeper had the V5C? You filled it in and it was sent by post? I think it's a safe bet it wasn't done online.
Did you get the V5C/2? If not, why not?
A month down the line, with no sign of anything happening, I'd be sending a V62 in. If you don't have the V5C/2, it's going to cost you £25 and take longer.0 -
Long story which I wont go into.
My point and what I am asking is, as the registered keeper has not changed yet (due to DVLA slowness) and it is still showing as taxed; from a practical viewpoint, so long as i get the car insured, am I good to go?0 -
If it's taxed, it's taxed.0

If it's taxed, it's taxed.
Well that's what I thought as until they process the V62, they won't know ownership has changed and the previous keeper's tax is still active. Just wondered if DVLA have some way of knowing if a car had been used on the road in the interim or whether they would even bother to look (I assume ANPR logs every car but don't know if it bins data from taxed cars and only stores untaxed ones).0 -
Whether it has been or not is irrelevant. It's taxed until the point it's not taxed. The untaxing can't be backdated.0
