Weird smell in bedroom

A new screw on collar fitted and the smell disapeared.
Apparantly it's something to do with it being made of Bakerlite , which causes a reaction after heat and age take it's toll0 -
As previously mentioned we have vile aluminium windows and bad condensation. I cleaned the windows yesterday and the paint started coming off the windowsill - the wood is rotten, totally wet. Could the smell be coming from the rotten wood?
How serious is this, we plan to replace the windows next summer.
