Are your floors at all springy? Although you say you know the smell of dry rot...

no not really, we had dry rot at my parents and i could smell it for ages before they thought they had a problem. not the sort of smell you forget and it smelt bad all the time.

  • Before going for a high drama option - bumble bees, orange rot and the like - presumably if you own your flat you had a survey before buying it which looked at damp? If not, why not get a free survey from one of the damp proofing firms. If a survey, a year ago, did not identify problems, and you are also improving ventilation, may be you should try a dehumidifier if you have problem with condensation in the house?

Thanks peartree. Have been using a dehumidifier for a while.
We've got two big rattan toy boxes in there, i took them out yesterday and today - no smell. I wonder if the boxes, being natural material, are taking on the condensation and thus creating the smell. also left the heating on low last night and there's no condensation either. hoping it's as simple as that and that i'm not kidding myself!

At the risk of sounding a bit random - does it smell like the sugary outer coating of vitamin or iron tablets?

Alright Maypole I'll put your mind at rest................
You know the light fitting on the ceiling , well the screw on section just above the bulb tends to get quite warm, and over the years it gives off a fishy smell especially when the light in question is on!
I know of a few people who have found this to cure the problem especially on older light fittings.
So any fishy smells from now on, put your nose to the light fitting first!
Any way keep this to yourself and don't tell anyone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
