I wonder if the fraudster is perhaps quite close to the OP, eg a 'friend' ex neighbour etc. Someone close to OP is more likely to know his financial affairs (and maybe statemnets have got lost too etc0

You cannot buy things online using a cheque.
Since the abolition of cheque guarantee cards it is very difficult to buy things from retailers using cheques except high value items where the retailer will certainly not release the item until the cheque clears.
Possession of the driving licence should not change things. In the UK businesses do not usually agree to accept an unsupported cheque on production of ID.
Your statement that the bank did not want to tell you who the cheque was made payable to is also strange as for them to have paid the cheque the cheque would have had to have been presented prior to you reporting the cheque book lost.
Yes I have heard of overdrafts. I will therefore rephrase. How did the fraudster know that you had sufficient funds in the account PLUS a substantial overdraft facility to have allowed a high value cheque to have been paid? Different words, same meaning.0
