Currently have our policy through joint Nationwide Flex account, which we 'upgrade' to cover worldwide and pre existing conditions.

Husband over 70 so we already pay the additional fee. Both have several pre existing medical conditions. Nothing too serious, all stable, no ongoing investigations and no recent medication changes.

We did claim last year when both contracted Dengue Fever, and I was in hospital for a week.

Due for renewal next month and premium has increased by 17% to £325. Agent has assured us that no increase is because of the Dengue.

To be honest, I don't know whether that is good value or not, but would appreciate some pointers, rather than starting cold with all the comparison sites:(.

    Hi there,
I have used Staysure, Travel Insure4Medical and Alpha Travel insurance for the past three years, I am younger but have ongoing medical conditions. All of these have worked out cheaper than Nationwide FlexDirect offering.

    In case anyone is interested:

With 4 medical conditions each (one being last year's Dengue Fever which hopefully was a one off:cool:) results for Annual Worldwide for a couple, with one over 70

    Staysure £723

    Travel Insurance 4 Medical £767

    Able2Travel £764 (but only £3k cancellation/curtailment which isn't enough for big trip:o) or £1024

Nationwide £325. Obviously, I've renewed with Nationwide:)

Too late for you but for anyone else reading the thread.

I found Leisure guard (I think that's the name) good. I followed the advice on Martin's insurance guide. DH has various ailments although not unusual ones and they itemised how much the policy cost and then how much added for him and then for me (only a few pounds as I've not got any ongoing issues). I liked the transparency. I just take out European cover as that's what I use most and then upgrade if I book a holiday further afield.

I would check out this thread before buying a policy with them.

Thanks for that. We're with Nationwide and paid £232 top up in February this year for OH s complaints. He's now got Rheumatism, too, which will have to be declared. I've been wondering whether we should look elsewhere, mainly because the interest on the account tops in November.

Definitely worth doing some research before you renew but be prepared for a higher premium on your Nationwide policy.

I found getting an online quote, from the 3 I mentioned above, was really easy and all had the same medical screening questions.

We have the Nationwide policy by virtue of a long standing Flex account, so no interest to lose.

Possibly worth mentioning, but we did have to claim last August after both contracting Dengue Fever in Thailand, which involved a hospital stay for me.

    Apart from:
    • some insensitive middle of the night calls to my husband (who thought I'd died:eek:)
    • a system for uploading various claims documents which is a complete PITA
    • delay in refunding substantial credit card deposit without which the hospital wouldn't admit me:cool:
our claims were settled in approx 2 months

i got mine through unite union i have an ongoing medical problem paid £117 for a year for me and the wife for Europe, but excess would be £400 if i used it. which i haven't had to worth asking any insurer if premium would be cheaper with higher excess.

Same as Badger09 & Pollypenny, but we have the N/W FlexPlus worldwide policy at £13pm.

Non life threatening health issues which have been included free for some years previously are incurring charges now under the Nationwide policy changes. £99.40 on top of the £156, then the £65 age cost as well. Total for 2019-2020 will be £320.40

Oddly, the emergency minor operation I had in Jamaica earlier this year (did cost total of US$15,000) didn't seem to be the main culprit behind the cost hike according to the operative.

Renewals after 1 Nov will not be able to select the £4.50pa to exclude a policy excess either.

Anyway, Badger09's research on prices is very helpful. Thanks.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

It's a pity that Nationwide doesn't allow us to exclude winter sports cover. That must be a costly aspect which the rest of us subsidise.
