inedequate pool filter pump

I bought 10ft Pool with filter pump included. All attached as per guide. Pump making a noise so assumed would do the job it was meant to do. Pool unused for a few days, pump still going the whole time. On lifting cover water was green and stinking, pump still making a noise. Pool had to be emptied, leaving green stain all over PVC/pool material. Contacted manufacturer, who after seeing proof of purchase, photos of set up and discoloured empty pool, said they would send a new pump. Therefore admitting pump was at fault. Told me I would just need to clean the pool re-fill it and attach new pump. I told them I did not have time to clean the pool, nor should I have to. Requested a refund which was declined.
My point is the pool and pump came as a set. The pump was clearly inadequate for the job resulting in an empty, stinking, green pool. A part of this set didn't work resulting in damage to the other part of the set - agreeably not permanent.

I have since read some reviews from buyers with same issue.

Am I right or wrong to expect a full refund? Thanks

The pool had been up for approx 3 weeks and had been unused, and covered for 5 days I think - during that time we still maintained the pump/filter. Thank-you
  • Hi, can you offer any advice please? Thanks again

Given weather over the recent weeks a pump shouldn't be the sole solution to stop algae.

Have you been treating the water in any other way based on the pool makers instructions ?
  • No instruction given for any other water treatment.

We've always used chemical tablets in the past but were trying to avoid the smell that goes with them this time.
I tried to add link but as a new user I am restricted so -

    Product Description

Thinking of upgrading your outdoor swimming pool experience? If your above ground pool isn't part of a set which already includes a filter pump, the Flowclear™ filter pump is an essential piece of kit. Unless you want to constantly be replacing your swimming pool water, which can be costly and time consuming, you will need some sort of pool filter system to keep your water clean and clear of debris. Filter cartridge pumps are an economical and convenient way to keep your pool water clean, and are so simple to set up. The 330gal Flowclear™ Filter pumps come with a 3.1in x 3.5in filter cartridge that can be simply and easily replaced. Even if you are swimming in your pool every day, a cartridge will last a minimum of two weeks, and much longer if you keep your pool covered and protected. The Flowclear™ 330gal filter pump can process up to 330gal/hour, that's a 1,249 L/hr capacity. Once the pump is connected to the pool and the filter system, the pump can push through 280gal of water per hour (1,060L/hr system flow rate). This integrated system flow rate makes the 330gal pump perfect for Bestway® pools with a volume of 1,100 litres - 8,300 litres such as Steel Frame and Fast Set™ Pools. Both hoses and a 3.1in x 3.5in filter cartridge are included with the filter pump for swimming pools. Clamps to secure the hoses and prevent them coming loose are also included with the pump filter, and Bestway® pools come with integrated inlet and outlet holes to conveniently connect to the swimming pool pump. Bestway® Pool Filter Pumps comes with an installation manual to guide you through the simple set-up process. Whatever your Bestway® pool size, you'll find a swimming pool pump and filter to suit in the Bestway® Pool Accessories collection.
  • As someone who has had a proper outdoor pool in the past a pool can go from clear to green virtually overnight. You will need to add chlorine to keep it clean.
  • So when a pool is sold with a pump/filter and there is no recommendation to use anything further - surely it is not fit for purpose?

I'd say most people would assume the pump would be sufficient, otherwise why would it be sold alongside the pool.

I'm just wondering who to contact to take this further, I dont have £60 just to throw away.
I've now learnt that I need to avoid pools with pumps!

No - you're missing the point - you need a pump and this provides an element of circulation and filtering. Depending on usage, sun and various other elements you'll also need to treat the water. This isn't going to be provided with the pump instructions but may be as part of the pool instructions.

Even if not then common sense and experience with any quantity of water will tell you that you either need to regularly replace it or treat it in some way.

Hopefully you don't leave your bath water for weeks at a time and expect it to be crystal clear and fresh each time you get in - same principle applies.

This is as clear a case as there is of 'user error'
  • You don't have to spend £60, you just need to get your hands dirty for half an hour cleaning it.

For a small pool like this you can use chlorine granules and get a cheap test kit to make sure you use enough/not too much.
