£410 to paint 2 rooms?

I been quoted £410 to paint 2 rooms the rooms arnt that big being as its 1 bedroom apartment.

I also provide my own paint which as just cost me £200 .....more then i wanted to pay but i was going on the persons advice on how many litres i will need.

What has to be done is : Sand & make good walls, with fine surface filler, sand smooth, use caulking for smooth paint finish, paint walls, ceiling and doors.

Does this price sound ok as its my first quote ive had and ive already agreed to it.

It does sound a little on the steep side, as you are providing the paint.
Are the walls in a really bad condition ??
I think you have answered your own question in that you know you only have one quote.
I also think that it can depend on which part of the country you are in.

Im in London area , he says it will take him 3 days , walls are not to bad condition just need some filler in some places but nothing major.

I didnt know the paint would cost me £200 but i went for expensive brands as i thought it might be better quailty.

Regarding paint i want to open a tin to test it on a wall , would this spoil the paint if i do this as im not getting it done till about 2 weeks time?

It wont spoil the paint.... as long as you ensure the lid is replaced correctly.

I am not sure if the price you have been quoted is fair or not for your area... but I am sure someone else on here will be able to advice you appropriately.

When youve firmly got the lid back on, turn the tin upside down for a second. It seals any air gaps there might be. Id say the price is slightly expensive, so get some more quotes.

How many Ltrs did he tell you to get, as £200 is a lot of money just for paint, even with Dulux paint, I'm sure you have paid too much for two rooms.

When I do a quote/job, I always tell and write the customer, that I will supply all the paint except the colour.
I use Dulux, or sometimes Gliddens as just as good, and for undercoat, gloss satinwood etc I only charge for what I use, some decorators will charge you for a 2.5lt tin of satinwood, just to paint 2 doors, a frame and a bit of skirting, and then they take the rest the home.

I have supplies of UC, satinwood, eggshell and white emulsion that I keep in my shed, so the client only pays for what I use, and its better if I supply it, as he dont want all sorts of tins clogging up his garage.

Obviously whatever colour is left they keep anyway, and even if they ask me to get as they havent the time, I still leave the colour, as I dont want hundreds tins of paint clogging up my shed lol

Could you give a rough measurement of the rooms, is there carpets down, and is the ceiling to be painted, as that has to be done first and dry before he can start on the walls, but you can fill your time waiting for ceiling to dry by sanding down woodwork, making good etc.

where in london are you?, pity you have agreed as if you werent too far in london, I would have come and given you a quote.

Hi thanks for the reply , one of the rooms is 16 foot x 12 foot and i was told i need 10 litres for this , i thought it was a bit much for paint as i got coloured paint and i try a tester and i think it will only need 1 coat...he didnt measure up or anything he just told me to get it

Ceiling has to be painted but no carpets down.

If you take an average room, 10X12 or thereabouts, then 5 lts might just cover it with 2 coats, depending on the make, and what colour is already the existing paint, and what colour is going on top.
I normally do 3 coats even with dulux, but a lot of painters do 2.
Personally, I always slightly water the paint down, and I always use dulux, it wont lose any of its depth, but will look a lot better.

Even though you dabbed a bit on and think one coat will cover, it wont, you might think it looks like it, but in certain lights you will see where its not.

Now you have mentioned the ceilings are getting painted, I really dont think £410.00 is too bad a price, I know I would charge a bit less, but I always do lol.

The average painter will charge anything from approx £80-£150 per day, dont forget they have overheads too, like brushes, rollers, poles, dustsheets, scrapers, knives etc, You would get it much cheaper if you went with an Eastern European.

At the end of the day, even if you paid £410.00, or £300, if your not happy with it, then you can refuse to pay all the amount.
  • I'm probably not qualified to answer this not being in the trade, but maybe I am! I have done all my own painting and DIY for many, many years now - however, these days that is because I couldn't get a good decorator in my area, when I wanted them, if I tried. I'm not in London but for good job in two rooms, I'd take their arms off at that price.

I'm bemused at your 'good paint' price though. I always go to a trade centre for my paint and, when I have used decorators, they have gone to exactly the same trade centre (that is generally how we found each other). My rooms are pretty big but I've never paid anything like that amount on paint. (Are you going for DIY shed branded?). I wouldn't expect paint (assuming it is the same colours) to come to more than say £80 - and that is without the discount your decorator will get at the same place.

Well 2 Dulux 5 litres tins cost me £60 , 4 tins of 2.5litres for bedroom cost £17 each , 3 tins of gloss at £10 each and 1 wall paper at £25 as i want one wall wallpapered.

Also 1 tin of 5 litres dulux for ceiling at £10

    So total was £193

Decorator never said he could get it cheaper , how much cheaper can they get it for then?
