Moral Dilemma - Child's Compenstion

Options
Hi All

My first post on here. I made a claim for my minor daughters' flight delay to South Africa. They were traveling as unaccompanied minors (15 and 17 years old) to visit family, who met them as they landed. Their flight was delayed for 6 hours, due to a technical failure, on the hottest day of this year and they had to sit on the runway, in the plane, in extreme heat, with no air-conditioning, before the flight eventually was cleared to depart. I have received €600 compensation per child.

My dilemma is do I keep the money, as I paid more for the tickets or do they get the money as compensation for the inconvenience of the delay? I note that compensation payments for personal injury are paid to the court and retained for the child until they reach 18.

What are you thoughts?

In law, the compensation belongs to your daughters. It maters not who paid for it.

  • No moral dilemma. You weren't on the flight. The compensation was for them. If you keep it you're stealing from your children.

The situation with personal injury claims for minors is quite different.

the compensation is for inconvenience and suffering to those on the runway. That wasn't you it was your daughters. You were going to pay for the flight anyway so that doesn't come into it.
