Window cleaner taking me to small claims court

I asked a window cleaner who was cleaning my neighbors house if he could do mine the same time. He agreed and I paid him right there. I said we can’t usually afford to get it done as we have lots of kids to feed and this was a little treat to me etc just in small talk.
He cleaned them and he left us his card in case we wanted them cleaned again.
Off he went.
a month later he cleaned them again and posted an invoice through the door.
I text the number and stated I only wanted them cleaned once etc.
No reply. We came home 6 months later to find an invoice for £63 claiming he had cleaned them every month. Again I text and said the same as before. This time he text back saying he wouldn’t have kept cleaning for 6 months if he had knew. I have tried to find my old phone with the message on but have no idea where it is.
I have refused to pay stating it was just the once I asked for etc and he has now said he is taking me to a small claims court where I will incure a lot of extra charges.

Is this man for real?
What do I do? I can’t afford to pay and even if I could I wouldn’t because it feels like I’m throwing my money at someone who will only go and do the same to someone else.

Any advice is appreciated
Do i message him back?
What do I do?

What do you mean by he has said he is taking you to court? Has he sent a formal Letter Before Action or merely a text threatening it?

Has he actually been cleaning the windows monthly for six months?

As waamo asks, has he formally sent a letter before action?

As for incurring a lot of extra charges, that's just bluster. If he won he could claim his unpaid charges.

No, the window cleaner said the op would incur extra charges.

Yes, bluster. What extra charges could he claim beyond the £63 he might claim?
  • Hi,

it's not like a window cleaner to let non payment go as long as that, 2 defaults and that's it.

Were you away for the 6 months when you didn't know windows had been cleaned?
  • No he hasn’t sent any letter just a text. I don’t know if he has been cleaning my windows as I’ve never been here when he says he has and I clean them every two weeks myself. I’ve only had a couple of invoices through the door to which both times I have messaged him and explained the same each time. I never agreed to him cleaning them regularly for me and it was only a one off as I paid him then and there for them.
  • No I haven’t been anywhere but work shifts so am at work for 14 hours a day when I do work.
  • It’s been 3 weeks now..and you have made no attempt to pay me.. if it was the first time or even 2nd time I cleaned your windows I would of understand and agreed with you..but you let me clean your windows for 7 months and then tell me when your bill gets to..£63....that I didn’t want you to clean my windows is not true...I have no option to take you to a small claims court which you will be incurring more expensive...

This is the text I received.
I haven’t let him do anything as I never agreed to it plus I have only had two invoices through. The first one I messaged him the 2nd time he did it and explained I didn’t agree to a second time and please stop and the last was the message I’ve just sent stating the same.
I have tried to find my old phone I messaged him on as proof I sent the first message but can’t find it :(

Tell him that you asked him to clean your windows as a one off, and that you have no other cards or invoices from him to suggest that he's cleaned them more than twice so you strongly dispute his claim that he's cleaned them for 7 months. A reasonable person wouldn't allow arrears to mount up this long. I'd pay for the times that he's given you the cards (so two cleans), nothing more. Should he take you to the small claims court you can file a defence but it sounds like he's bluffing.
