Half a set is broke...half isnt

Hopefully this is the correct place to post this, if not please accept my apologies.

Just over a month ago I purchased garden furniture. A 5 piece set of a table and four chairs and a garden swing. Both the table and chairs and garden swing belonged to a particular “set” so that all furniture matched.

Last week a screw that holds the canopy to the swing in place snapped during high winds. I have called the shop and explained what had happened.

They have responded by informing me that they cannot replace the swing as they have zero garden furniture left in stock. They will offer a refund for the swing however will not accept a return on the table and chairs. My issue with this is that I bought the two sets of furniture to match in the garden. I would now have to purchase a swing that does not match the rest of the furniture. Having the furniture “match” may not seem a big deal but the sets where not cheap and bought together for that specific reason.

I have spoken to the company’s customer service who have told me if we had bought the two sets online they would be happy to refund both. With this being an in-store purchase we have to deal with the branch manager. He has been nothing but rude and unhelpful and I am trying to avoid confrontation with him regarding this which is why I have turned to MSE for advice.

Can anyone advise on my rights or ways to resolve this?

You have the right to accept the refund and try to source a suitable swing from elsewhere

Is it not possible to replace the snapped bolt (and any related parts that were damaged)?

Thank you for the reply, however as the "set" was manufactured by the company I bought the swing from, no other swing will match the rest of the furniture.

I know this may seem pedantic but the two sets of furniture were purchased for the reason that they belonged to the same set. We wanted matching furniture, now because of a fault to the furniture we are unable to have this after a significant outlay.

That is what we were hoping for but as they have no more stock they have no spare parts unfortunately

I'm surprised they offered a refund. I would have thought leaving a canopy on in high wind is user damage.

I understand your point, but I would expect a canopy to have a longer life span than three weeks in August.

Maybe they don't, but unless it's a particularly peculiar bolt surely you can get a suitable replacement from your local bolt retailer?

Ive got vague recollections that if something is faulty as part of a set, then the set would be considered faulty. Had a quick scan on the CRA but not jumping out at me?!

There is something like that I've seen on here as well. However the swing was not part of the set, it is merely matched to a set. I suspect the answer would be different if a chair from the set was damaged- but even then I suspect the table and chairs would be refunded, not the swing as well.

It is the same as buying a fancy matching toaster and kettle as two seperate purchases, i.e. Not as a set. If the toaster broke within warranty you wouldn't expect them to replace the kettle as well.

We had a plastic bolt with the consistency of cheese snap on one of these
I replaced it with a steel bolt from my local screw supplier
    The replacement has not snapped
