I'm one for always ensuring you have a great relationship with the neighbours. We take their bins in and out. We buy their kids a birthday present. You don't need to live in each other's pockets, but you don't know when you will need them.

I agree with many of the posts above.

Your expectations are completely unrealistic. People work. Not everyone can do DIY monday to Friday 9 till 5.

I hope you never need works done to your property because your once peaceful and tolerant neighbours may now be more inclined to be opposed to it now you have suggested they are an issue.

Be a little more neighbourly and apologise for being over the top. You will both probably benefit in the long run from being on good terms
  • They were working all day, probably knackered and hoping to get the job done so they can go home and then a neighbour starts moaning..... no wonder you got a mouthful back.

As everyone says let them get on with it and it will be done, it's not like they are setting up a business, it's a simple one off job. I'm sure there will be times when you need stuff doing that might upset the neighbours. Live and let live.

I’m very sensitive to neighbour noise, particularly when it’s inconsiderate, but I wouldn’t have complained about this. I might have faux cheerfully asked how many days they expected it to go on for but that’s about it.

My neighbour, who maybe a council tenant (they may have brought it from the council I don't know) have been building a decking. I have no problem with that but all last week they have been starting at about 6pm and working until 9pm. It was quiet on Friday but then they started up again at around 9:30am and went on to about 3pm, we went out for most of the day so it wasn't too bad. Today we were in all day as it was my Dads Birthday and we were doing lunch. They started up again at around 10am and by 7pm I had had enough and ask politely when they planned on finishing and the guy said half an hour. I left it until around 8 (about when my kids should be going to bed) and he said they were nearly done. We got in to a slightly heated debate about what he should and should be doing on a Sunday. I mostly kept my cool but he started f'ing at me. They finally shut up at 8:45, when we put the kids to bed as it would be a waste of time doing it earlier.

I had a look on my local council web site as they had now got my back up and the 'guidance' says 8am to 6pm week days, 8am to 1pm on Saturday and no work on Sundays or bank holidays.

In reality I don't have a problem with doing a bit of DIY on a Sunday but getting on for 12 hour of it is a bit much, I though 6pm finish is reasonable. We all have work to do from time to time.

What should I do, if I report them as I suspect they are contractors doing some weekend work or just put up. We are thinking of moving in the next couple of years as they have been a pita since they moved in and have had enough. We had problems in the past with noise and we are not on speaking terms.

    Three bolded bits.

    1) What's that got to do with anything

    2) you were out most of the day, how do you know the hours they were working?

    3) I'm not surprised.
    It's nothing , not nothink.
  • My neighbour, who maybe a council tenant (they may have brought it from the council I don't know)

    Why is that relevant?
have been building a decking. I have no problem with that but all last week they have been starting at about 6pm and working until 9pm.

Seems reasonable. They are probably out at work all day so only have evenings to work on it.

Again, seems reasonable. Plus you were out so why does it matter?

Would you rather they started at 6am and woke you up but be finished earlier?

They were trying to get the job finished before the weekend was done and you decided to go out and start having a go. Not surprised you got their backs up.
I had a look on my local council web site as they had now got my back up and the 'guidance' says 8am to 6pm week days, 8am to 1pm on Saturday and no work on Sundays or bank holidays.

Thats exactly what it is. A guidance only. Who exactly do you think is going to enforce it, the police?

    Report them to who?
  • Blimey, I'll take that over my ex mid 30's neighbour who played bass music from afternoon to early hours in the morning every day plus domestics with his girlfriend and turning up at my door drunk as hell......

Like everyone else says, you're the unreasonable one here.

I have recently returned from a longish trip abroad, where it's consistently hot during daylight - 35 or above. So not much work can happen in the heat of the day. A neighbour was replacing their roof and they started at about 6am, very noisy. Then again at about 6pm to 9/10pm when it got too dark. Meanwhile at the same times, people were sawing logs with chainsaws.

That's just how it is - I was annoyed on day 1 but learnt to just live with it as that's the pace of life where I was and governed by the weather.

Your neighbours finished at 2045 which is before it gets dark so that doesn't sound bad at all.

The key to surviving summer in built up areas! I have mantra that helps me - “They are not doing anything wrong. They are not doing anything wrong...” I really do chant that to myself when I feel the blood rising. Most recently when my neighbour decided to build a canoe 10ft away from my shady reading spot on the nicest day of the year.

A very interesting read and surprised to learn there are so many understanding ppl out there willing to tolerate DIY noise outside 8am-6pm. I'd be annoyed if they starts 6am and still working after 7pm especially on a Sunday/bank holiday, but I'd let it slide as it's a one off project, and return the same curtsey one day knowing the neighbours are OK of having noise at those hours.
