You might be better off 'bumping' this thread tomorrow to see if PcHelpman is around. As, when it comes to not having SP2 installed for such a long time, I wouldn't be comfortable just installing SP2 on top of your system.

You can download it independently or have Microsoft or someone here send you the CD(I have them here), but it may be better to wait for more advice.

Personally, I would start from scratch and do a Clean install. Of course, the problem would be finding such and old version of XP Professional.

My suggestion in this case would be to approach Microsoft, if your key is genuine, to request the relevant copy of XP Professional.

It may be the case that your key would activate the latest version of XP Professional SP2, but I'm not sure.

Wait for some more advice.

On SP2 .... NEVER try to install it if the computer is under suspicion of being infected with malware. It won't install properly and could easily result in the user having worse problems.

Let's leave it at SP1 for the moment. SP2 can be installed when you are happy the machine is clean again.

Spikey ... the log you posted ... it's in the wrong format and very difficult to read on that layout. Please [SIZE=-1]be sure to turn off "Word Wrap" in your Notepad program.

As Donnie remarks please let us know what you are using for a firewall. If you don't have one we are all wasting our time because you will be infected with everything around no matter what we try and do here.

I can't see much wrong with the log apart from a couple of minor entries.

With all browsers and windows closed place a check/tick beside the following and hit the fix button .....

Delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm


Empty your Recycle Bin.


Run Ccleaner. Get it here if you don't have it already but remember to UNTICK the default option to install the Yahoo toolbar. You don't want it ......

Now update Superantispyware to the latest definitions and do a full system scan. PLEASE SAVE the scan report.


Reboot and post the SAS scan report and a fresh HijackThis log please in the correct layout.

and thw word wrap problem is only on this site for some reason?

First of all ... do you connect to the internet through a Router or by direct connection from the computer into the phone line?

If, as I suspect, this computer is connected directly to the phone line and not through a router you must get a firewall.

To check ... click on Start > Settings > Control Panel. In the Control Panel you will see Add/Remove Programs.

Click on that and wait for the list of installed programs to appear.

Check all the programs in that list carefully and see if any of them refer to a firewall.

Let us know what you find out.


So that we can see what starts on your computer open HijackThis and click the Open the Misc Tools section button.

Click the Generate StartupList log button. A confirmation box will pop up. Click Yes.

The Startup list text file will now be generated and opened on the screen.

Well we'll have to live with it, I guess, for the time being but at least make sure that Notepad's Word Wrap option is turned off.
