Hire car broke down - what are my options?

Hi there -
a preemptive question
I rented a car from Sicily by Car (SBC). It broke down on the way back to the airport (rather scarily it just started losing power whilst doing 90 km/h on the motorway, and the engine was making quite a large rattling noise). I managed to ditch it in a petrol station about an hour from the airport.
SBC sent a tow truck, and a taxi (which I had to pay €240).
I didn't pay for any additional cover (i had excess insurance), i'm yet to get a bill from SBC, but assuming I will, do i have any options for not paying? I'm slightly miffed that i may have to pay for their car breaking down.

They would need to show proof that the car broke down due to your negligence. Otherwise a section 75 claim will put paid to any shenanighans.
Who refunds your 240 euros? I would not let that lie.0 -
Thank you very much, it's much appreciated.
Will let you know what happens - still awaiting a report/contact from them (they've not taken any money yet).0
