Faulty iPad John Lewis

Guys, I could use some help please.
I purchased an iPad from John Lewis in April. It hasn't had much use and hasn't left the house. After a couple of months the screen 'went' whilst I was using it. (Flashing lines) I took it to the branch who sent it off, but checked it first and mentioned that it was like new without any signs of damage.
It has come back from their choice of service place suggesting its because of accidental damage and I would need to pay £300 to have it replaced.
I'm a bit shocked by how they've treated me, it's pretty clear the item doesn't have any damage, and the guys in the store have said they believe this fault doesn't actually have to be caused by accidental damage. But because of the report I am out of luck.
I've complained to head office but they aren't interested, only saying I have to get a second opinion before they will speak to me about it.
I'm down a stack of man-hours now chasing the situation.
John Lewis are normally excellent, its why its the only place I buy electrical items. This is supposed to have a 2-year guarantee, let alone 2 months.
Any thoughts appreciated, thanks for reading.

Take it t apple for a second opinion.0 -
What is this accidental damage ??
JL have inspected and should be able to say what you have damaged
You have three forms of cover
Apple whatever they cover on warranty .
JL likewise whatever they cover .
Both subject to terms and conditions .
Or your actual Consumer Rights against the vendor .
Under Consumer Rights you can challenge this via an independant report .0 -
Do you have photos of the device from before JL sent it off for assessment? (If the "repair" centre have damaged it and you have no proof then it might be difficult to rebut their assertion).0
