You were fully aware that your contract was with Amazon. You decided to bypass that and effectively broke the contract as you can no longer return what you originally purchased.
If you sold an item on eBay and the buyer wanted to return a different item, would you accept it? I think not.
Best you can do is explain everything to Amazon & forward any correspondence to them from the manufacturer and hope that they agree to accept it. If not, then, keep trying with the manufacturer0 -
