Recesses in the walls in showers and near the bath for neat storage of bottles.

Never thought to store the wine in the bathroom. Am looking at installing some racking and temperature control system in the space under the stairs. Would love to have a proper cellar, something like this would be great - https://www.spiralcellars.co.uk/spiral-cellars/

    :rotfl:

The spiral cellars are cool. Wine never really last that long in our house, so I'm going to build a rack on the wall to store it.

Whilst you're at it, with all these ideas I suggest you increase your budget!

Somewhere for wine would be good: I've 6/7 dozen bottles in a built in wardrobe but it's not ideal.

I've a few external items that need doing but although internally I'm limited by the size of the house I hope to do a few mods to keep down running costs. I'd look into grey water reuse, particularly if we all get pushed towards meters, and from an environmental point of view here in the water stressed SE I'd rather see a healthier flow in my local stream.

In my circumstances I'm looking to a single unit MHRV for the bathroom as I have baths to use up free hot water from my solar panels but a larger system my suit you. I'd also look in to future proofing your electrics: you might not want an electric vehicle yet, but whilst you are re-wiring shove in some decent cable so that you can put in a charger at a later date.
  • What boxerfan said, we put one in and the only time we have had smelly bin was when the kids were in nappies, All the food either goes in the compost bin, to the birds or down the waste. The only thing I have found it won't cope with is lamb bones. Ours is a franke, it's 15 years old and is still working fine. It's one of the only appliance in the kitchen that hasn't been replaced or fixed at some point.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Unvented hot water system, powerful showers (proper shower cubicles, not ones over a bath), lots of windows, flexible lighting that can go from very bright to subtle mood lighting, cinema room or at least a big wall mounted TV or projector with decent sound system, wireless music set up around the house (we have Sonos, but plenty of others to choose from).

With everything internet controlled make sure you have cabelling around the house so that whatever can be hardwired is done that way and get some sort of MESH system to manage wifi around the house.

Induction hob is a must have as is a boiling water tap, also get as much storage as reasonably allows to hide stuff away. Get a big dining table for meals with family and friends - get comfy chairs.

Do lots and lots of research, often it is worth spending a "bit" more to buy quality that will last a long time, but just because something is more expensive does not mean it is better quality. Listen to tradespeople, you can get a huge amount of advice for free based on decades of experience....you don't have to take every bit of advice, but it costs nothing to listen and learn.

The dining table thing is a good point. I only touched on designing to your furniture, but we established what we wanted based on how we live and then made sure it fit.

I really wanted a large dining table, H really wanted an island. We worked and worked on designs until we found something that suits us both. We had to think laterally and moved the laundry upstairs to accommodate what we want in the kitchen, but there's no compromise in the end and the table extends up to 3 metres.

Ditto, massive sofa. The door is placed in the lounge so that we can fit in a huge corner sofa - nearly 3x3 metres again.

We're a sociable house and I think it will make a tangible difference.

I may well look at waste disposal after reading this thread :)

    Money no object.

Start with a cellar, proper full hight one, avoids planning issues to create more space you can't get going up/out.

Kit it out with storage, toilet, chiller room, mini bar/kitchen area
The rest kit a den to live in in the winter or play/game room.

Try to have direct access to outside.

If money were no object, I wouldn't choose to have that in a basement. Costs a fortune and is potentially unreliable.

Mind you, I wouldn't choose more rooms than we really need either. We go out to so many houses where they want to extend but they're often not really using the space they have properly. More often than that, they're planning to build space that they have zero plans for. There was a brilliant example of bad space planning on here recently but I don't think the OP came back for more help.

Do you want a winter lounge or do you want a play/games room? If it doesn't have a specific purpose before you build it, it won't have one afterwards either. We can only sit in so many places at one time. Maybe other rooms could work harder/better.
