re-mortgage nightmare seeking compensation

I re-mortgaged my property recently and I'm looking for compensation, as it took 4 months for the new mortgage to complete:mad: despite being promised the mortgage would complete on time. The bank in question has given me a refund for all the phone calls (I made loads!) while chasing this up and for the difference in mortgage payments which I made to my previous lender and what I would've paid if the mortgage had completed on time. However, they have not given me compo for the stress I went through during this time or for the time I spent (endless hours!) trying to get the bank to push this forward and basically do their job properly! It's very frustrating when you are dealing with so many incompetent people:mad:

Today, I spoke to someone at the bank (in the claims department) and she said I had to give them a figure regarding the claim. Apparently, she is not allowed to suggest a sum. I have no idea how much I should ask for. On the one hand I don't want to appear too gready, but on the other hand I don't want to be short changed. Any suggestions would be very appreciated:D

Unless you can provide evidence that you suffered from stress during this period (such as trips to the doctor who diagnosed it) then I would be staggered if you got anything for it.

There's a big difference between frustration and stress, i'm not saying it didn't stress you, but if you claim it did, expect to need to evidence this.

    Good grief.

I get stressed arranging clients mortgages. I get stressed because my newspaper doesn't get delivered in time to read it before "Everybody Loves Raymond" on C4 in the morning. If it's later than "Just Shoot Me" or well into the second half of "Frasier" I GO BALLISTIC. We all get stressed from time to time.

You sound like one of those people that is just out for everything you can get quite frankly. They've made up the difference in payments and compensated you for all monetary loss, but still that is not enough.

Did you not fall down a pot hole whilst worrying about your mortgage ? I'd claim for that aswell. Got to be a couple of grand in it.

So you are a mortgage adviser eh?:rotfl: whatever!!! you obviously don't live in the real world! how dare you make fun of me in this way. Who do you think you are? I HAVE been through a terrible time with this re-mortgage and for your information I am not "one of those people out to get everything I can" The bank manager agrees that there was a LOT of mistakes made during the re-mortgage process...all their fault too!!! Banks need to learn from their mistakes. I was told by several staff at the bank that I am entitled to put in a claim for stress:p so YOU obviously don't know much about the environment you work in. I won't bother posting on this board again, since some people on here are more interested in taking the pi** than offering advice:mad:
  • So you've been compensated for you're financial loss and your phonecalls?

I think you would just generate more stress for yourself, chasing them for the stress compensation.

Just stick in a silly number and be done with it. Don't waste any more of your time.

you don't have a clue what stress is - try being diagnosed with cancer, or one of your kids contracting a serious illness - get a life

I stubbed my toe on the sofa whilst walking out or the lounge this evening - I was distracted by Ant and Dec's (pesky northerners) witty japes, does anyone have the number for ITV as I want some compensation.......................................................................................

    To all you stress heads out there, do you ever think about this;

Charley whilst in BB house created (from nothing) loads of stress, and the second she left, the stress left with her.

In other words stress is often a self created entity - it does'nt actually exist, it's such a construct of your mind.

We've all met them, people who think there house purchase is oh so stressful, yet another person given the exact same circumstances would just let it all take it's own merry course - no stress, no panick.

    Get over yourself.
  • I am stressed reading this thread, I think I might put a claim in!!
  • TBF if they have made good any losses that you have incured then you have done well.

I had a simiar experience with my lender when they switched my product at the end of a fixed term. They cocked it up and it took ages to sort out, in fact the girl who managed my "complaint" told me she couldnt even understand how they had done what they had to my account. Anyway, they made good the extra costs I incured, and I asked about a goodwill gesture for all the hassle. I think I got a token couple of hundred and was told that was their max and if I wanted more then it would have to go through the FSA who would ask me to prove my time spent, loss etc etc. I took the couple of hundred, but I was just chancing it by asking - if they said no I would have dropped it.

Life is to short to worry about what happened after the issue is resolved, but as it appears to be important to you ( my motgage comes some way down my list of important things) then just give them a figure of what you want, but be prepared to justify your need for that sum given that they have already made good - i.e. put you back in the position you were in before they cocked up.

Essentially, it's the price of "hurting your feelings". If you have suffered damage to your physical or mental health, you'll need to get a personal injuries lawyer to advise. The extent of the damage will need to be medically assessed. PI lawyers have access to all sorts of "expert witnesses" who can carry out this assessment. But the big sums are only awarded for permanent damage.

It rather sounds like your "damage" was temporary, as it lasted throughout the mortgage process, but not beyond that.

In these situations many organisations send flowers or hampers to say "sorry". So any financial sum needs to be of a similar figure - £50-£100 I would guess.

Alternatively, put it behind you and move on.
