Water meter installed after house move

If you want to read your meter, a manhole cover key is a fiver or so. I asked for a meter, and we immediately halved our water bill.

My modern meter isn't like that at all... out in the middle of the road somewhere underground is where the meter is I believe. They don't come onto the property to read it, it's all done out there, or remotely, or something.

I'm bewildered by it, so have chosen to ignore its existence I might be moving this month so will just phone them and see what they say and might finally know what happens.
