Im not sure. They have less staff so do save on that, but they also have more (and smaller) stores. Where I live Tesco have a metro store in city centre, and big store on retail park. In the same area Aldi have 4 stores. Is that efficient?
Also self service, why dont Aldi have these? Surely theyre more efficient?
And if they did, people like me who only go in for bits & bobs who dont wish to stand in big queues might go in more often. As their cattle market approach puts me off from going there.

I think you'll find that Aldi know how to run their super-efficient global business rather better than you give them credit for. You don't reach their size in 73 years of trading without learning a thing or two.

Self-service, by the way, is being trialled in their Glascote store. I'm guessing they're well aware of the dysfunctional Lidl checkouts and would rather like ones that work properly.

Started a month ago and love it, quality is good.

Baskets are much easier, deep and on wheels.

Fast-paced checkout, (didn't expect it first time so it was chaos lol), big queue does not matter, i just dump all in the basket and use the shelf begins checkout to sort packing - taking my time.

This morning end checkout, people in front, tannoy sounds comes on I step away from queue and stand in middle and then announce a new till, I'm there first ;)

Aldi every time for me. Meat from local farm shop but everything else Aldi. Used to frequent Lidl but the one in our town is poky and a very limited range compared to the larger, newer stores. Plus the fact it's next to the mainline station and nearby schools means it's pretty much packed all the time. Will use Tesco if I'm desperate. Used to love Sainsburys but they outright take the p ISS with their pricing

Presumably you're yet another Tesco worker hacked off by the impact of Aldi and Lidl.

    Checks monthly salary..... nahhhhh!

For the record though that's not how they do it. Highly efficient retailing and a much smaller range of goods is how they do it. And much lower margins.

Am I detecting a pattern here?

Aldi statement regarding its horse meat beef burgers....

“ A spokesman for Aldi said random tests had shown that the products they had withdrawn contained between 30% and 100% horsemeat. “If the label says beef, our customers expect it to be beef.”

Yet another food scandal affecting Aldi poultry this time is the 2 Sisters food group (google it!) which had Aldi damage limitation dept at full stretch again forcing them to issue this....
“Aldi said: “We have suspended supply from this site while we carry out an urgent investigation into these allegations.”

It seems rather odd that undercover journalists are able to find out what Aldi are getting up to behind closed doors but Aldi themselves seem rather ignorant of as are you!

Then again it is cheap so best policy..... look the other way

Carry out a personal vendetta against Aldi based entirely on selective searches if you wish - despite the fact that these problems hit pretty much ALL the supermarkets because they tend to use the same suppliers.

Those of us who, unlike you, view the matter objectively, and are not trying to denigrate a particular retailer for some reason, shop at Aldi (and Lidl) because we're fed up with being ripped off by Tesco et al charging much higher prices for very much the same products, made by the same suppliers.

If you like adding 30% to the cost of your groceries for no reason, that's your choice.

Quick question to all you Lidl shoppers...

What options do they sell by way of jar sauces? Specifically Chinese/Asian inspired stuff for with diced Chicken.

Eg. Black Bean, Sweet chilli, Thai Green curry etc.

Aldi used to do a couple, but all they seem to have now is sweet and sour. Aldi do a Thai Green curry paste, that you have to make up, but I want something "ready to go - chuck in the pan". They're OK for curry sauces, so that's covered, just wanted something more Chinese'y.

    Thanks in advance.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Not sure that this list covers absolutely everything they do, but gives you a rough idea.

    By telling lies.
Did you see watchdog the other night?
Their price comparison comparing a bottle of their own brand champers for £14 with a bottle of moet from one of the major supermarkets at an attemp to prove theyre the cheapest.

Yes i know the all do it to a certain extent, but i find aldi are the worst offenders & you lot fall for it hook line & sinker, cos their products arent the greatest as shown by various blind taste tests.

Ill stick to just shopping around which saves me more money tham just blindly buying aldis stuff which is a bit hit & miss.

You've obviously missed this recent ASA finding on misleading Tesco advertising aimed at Aldi:

    https://www-independent-co-uk.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/aldi-advert-save-tesco-champagne-asa-complaint-a9007616.html?amp_js_v=a2&amp_gsa=1&amp&usqp=mq331AQCKAE%3D#aoh=15690433909963&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&ampshare=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.independent.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fuk%2Fhome-news%2Faldi-advert-save-tesco-champagne-asa-complaint-a9007616.html%3Famp%23aoh%3D15690433909963%26referrer%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%26amp_tf%3DFrom%2520%25251%2524s

You must also have missed various surveys by Which? pitting Aldi in the top 2 or 3 best supermarkets, and consistently much cheaper (with Lidl), along with review after review rating their products more highly than the big brands.

Shop around by all means. You'll struggle to beat Aldi and Lidl, and it depends how you value your time.
