Thoughts on Lidl?

They will man the tills when necessary and tidy up in quieter times. Id rather pay less for my shopping and have a bit of mess.Lidl (& Aldi) score well with most shoppers due to price, quality and limited range (though this appears to put some people off). This has been their business model for decades. Of course it helps that both are privately owned.
I don't know how recently you've shopped in Aldi but the range is far less limited than it used to be so the model has changed. As an example, I used to do about 50% of my shop in Aldi and the rest in Sainsburys. Now I can do 90+% of my shopping in Aldi.
Aldi seems to have more staff than Lidl and they all multi-task. The stores where I see mess seem to be a result of the quality of the management.0 -

I know they get people served quickly but I'd always pick a self service til in that situation.
In a word, yes - appalling. They're obviously geared up to preventing theft (more so than other supermarkets) and that's probably the main problem. They're very slow indeed - there's a built-in pause between each item to be scanned, and that adds quite a time to the total, particularly when customers don't understand that (and why should they?).
Apart from that they're very glitchy and frequently demand attention from the poor person manning the till immediately next to them.
None of the other supermarkets use checkouts anything like this bad - believe me.0 -
Lidl have a fantastic bakery.
I love their low gi brown loaf.0 -
Website is a pain at the moment, every time I try to link to the 'Have your say' page I get a page about turkeys instead0

The other thing to note is that reductions at Lidl SC tills always need to be authorised by a member of staff so that holds things up as well. This wouldn't happen if they used bar codes on their reductions.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Glad it’s not just me :T
I quite like the self service apart from this hiccup.
My main problems are small range of foods so I can only do half of my shopping, fortunately our nearest Lidl is next door to Morrison’s who have a lovely cafe. I’m not convinced that all their food is high quality. I bought some nectarines and pears which have ended up in the bin as they are so bad. Hopefully this is a one off.
They are building a brand new Aldi in the same town, Yeovil. It’s due to open next year although they don’t know exactly when. It’ll be great to have a choice0 -

That's interesting. I must admit I've never tried to do a complete shop in Lidl. I just use then for a few favoured things . I don't think you'll have that problem when your new Aldi opens. I manage 90%+ of my shopping in there.
Out of interest, what do you buy that Lidl doesn't stock?:)0 -
Some people say Lidl doesn't do it for them and I agree to an extent. The problem is the large queues' at the two checkouts' operated also I've noticed unclean plastic basket's and being expected to pack at the counter along the front.Price labeling on the shelves of items is somtimes hard to detect if at all and and clothing makes the store look jumble.
Its ok for me with two or so items but as mentioned queues' and cause problem's.Some tool's are fine and good value also and often sold for more on Ebay by sellers'.Its basic too.0 -
I love Aldi but can’t cope the checkouts lol
Too fast for me0 -
Adding Friday to the weekend offers has really increased the number of customers shopping in Lidl on Fridays. Today is the second week I have been slow getting round the shop because of the higher number in where normally I don't see that many.0
