Issues started when my wife, then girlfriend, lost her job due to the company going bust. Anxiety then settled in and she found it really difficult just to leave the house so I was holding the fort by myself for a while, taking out silly payday loans, which caught up with me in a big way. My wife, in the last year, has just got a job, doing amazingly well in it and the anxiety is away now.

I was on my way to tying to sort all the mess above but this rent problem has hit us for six, and been a massive blow.

Thanks again for being interested and trying to help!

£108 for satellite and cable is a luxury, not a necessity. I would give them a call and see if you can cancel or downgrade.
Presents need to be cut right back till you are in a better place.
Holidays are also a luxury that you can't afford right now.
Car is not listed as an asset

  • Brighthouse, expensive phone, taxis, a huge Sky package, it’s not hard to see why you are in trouble, and putting a television package ahead of the roof over your children’s heads is not a decision that I can really understand.

If you can sell the phone, cancel Sky, buy a bicycle instead of paying for Taxis and never go to Brighthouse ever again then you’ll be very well on the way to financial happiness and security.

Instead of looking at the rent arrears in isolation, why not consider your total situation. Have a word with a local debt charity.

I have managed to raise £1000 from family which has been a life saver. I'd say if you are in any trouble, speak to your family. They were more angry that I didn't mention it to them until this point!
Unlike some here, I am not omniscient. If I am wrong correct me. I won't take offence.

    Thanks MG.

The Virgin TV can go, the kids watch you tube more than the tv for their shows anyway, My wife and I watch netflix together at night after work or at the weekend so certainly won't be missed. I had it for my football but at the end of the day, I'd prefer to have a roof over my head and miss some football....

Presents will go down, our kids only at for christmas, no adults and only close family for kids.

Holidays, one of them I'm 3 payments away from paying for it, the other I can speak to my wife and discuss cancelling it. That would wipe out 2/3 of the outgoings for holidays.

I hadn't listed the car as an asset as it's technically still the finance company's? Is this wrong?

Looking into the Brighthouse issue, I can actually return the phone and that's that. (will double check this). A waste over the last 9 months but a lesson learned and I will stay away.

See above regarding my plan with Virgin. I was sleepwalking looking at everything on it's own instead of looking at the bigger picture, I feel so stupid for not realising!

The Taxi's I think are just going to have to be accepted as a cost in my wife getting to work, for now. Her boss is talking about moving to a more accessible town, where trains or buses could come into play, that would cut these costs easily.

    Thanks Whenlam.

The annoying thing is, in good faith I raised that money with my family to lower that amount back to what I could pay over the six months! The guy I spoke to at the council understood and said it would help my case to pay that bulk figure towards the debt! It's really frustrating but looks like I need to take the hit, explain to other bills whats going on and hopefully recover from all this by taking advise from the helpful people on this forum and some hard work on our part.
  • Hi Nala

You need to put the amounts you are paying now like car HP so you get a true picture of how your finances are working. How long is the debt frozen on your unsecured debts?

  • You have borrowed a £1000 to pay back the rent deficit. Has this been done? Have you cancelled your TV package? Does the tv package include your Netflix subscription?
